Yin Yue at Panda Hotel 悅來酒店殷悅 (Hong Kong, CHINA) ★★★☆☆

One of our longest serving staff is retiring in 2 weeks. I thought I should take this opportunity to thank him for his support over the years and at the same time, wish him the best in his retirement. Picking a place for our gathering wasn't as difficult as it looked. As we were having a meeting in Tsuen Wan, I suggested Yin Yue at Panda Hotel (悅來酒店 殷悅), a restaurant I haven't been to for at least a decade.

I can't imagine this Chinese restaurant used to be a Michelin recommended one some years ago. Once again, it proved they know nothing about Chinese cuisine. It's a decent choice if you happen to be in Tsuen Wan but it's definitely not a top restaurant in the city.

Assorted seafood with angel hair in lobster sauce (龍蝦汁海鮮天使麵) ($98) - Lunch got off to a slow start thanks to this angel hair dish tossed in what they called a lobster sauce. First and foremost, I didn't think this was angel hair to begin with and the lobster sauce was just way too gluey for anybody's liking. Not good.

Barbecued pork rice roll (蜜汁叉燒腸粉) ($52) - The rice roll was a little bit thick. The barbecued pork was fine though.

Seafood dumpling with beeroot (紅菜頭海鮮餃) ($51) - Looks like the perfect choice for a beet lover like me.

This was just OK. Surprised that the wrapper wasn't beetroot flavored.

Barbecued pork bun (蜜汁叉燒包) ($34) - Here comes the old school stuff with the traditional barbecued pork buns leading the way.

Actually not bad. Love the sponginess that goes with it.

Bean curd sheet roll with shrimp and pork in abalone sauce (蠔皇鮮竹卷) ($44) - Another traditional dim sum that was done the right way. A lot of restaurants like to go all out with the abalone sauce making it way too salty but this was right on the money.

Steamed chicken with fish maw and yam (淮山棉花雞) ($51) - Decent but not something I would order in hindsight.

Scallop and pork dumpling with wolfberry (杞子玉帶燒賣) ($51) - Another above average dim sum. The scallop and pork dumplings were pretty juicy and delicious with the wolfberry bringing some extra flavors to the mix.

Chilled sweetened sago and pomelo soup (楊枝甘露) ($48) - Everyone wanted something refreshing to end the meal and that's really nothing better to get than the chilled sweeted sago and pomelo soup. Very delicious with all the complex flavors coming together nicely. Probably the best dish of the afternoon and I guess we really saved the best for last.

I'll be off the entire week next week so this is really goodbye for us today. I wish my colleague good health and happiness in his retirement days. Hopefully, it won't be long before I join him in retirement (if I ever win a mark-six draw!).
