Regent Hotel Cake Shop (Hong Kong, CHINA) ★★★☆☆

Jelloman’s birthday is coming up soon, so I’ve been on the lookout for a birthday cake for her as part of the celebration. This is always going to be a tough call, since we’ve already exhausted most of the cake options over the years.

The Regent Hotel Cake Shop came to mind after I stumbled upon its small but refined selection of pastries on social media. I thought it was worth trying for this occasion.

Regent Hotel Cake Shop [Hong Kong, CHINA]: Popular birthday cake option. Signature honeycomb cake pecan sponge, longan honey mousse

They are only offering a handful of birthday cake options including honeycomb cake, strawberry Charlotte cake, Peruvian chocolate cake, and different flavors of mille-feuille.

Honeycomb cake ($368) — One of the more popular creations here.

Regent Hotel Cake Shop [Hong Kong, CHINA]: Popular birthday cake option. Signature honeycomb cake pecan sponge, longan honey mousse

This wasn’t a sophisticatedly designed cake. The delicate layer of pecan sponge was hugged by some deeply aromatic longan honey mousse, supposedly to create a palate-soothing experience.

I thought the heart and soul of the cake — the organic longan honey harvested from a local farm in Hong Kong’s New Territories, would provide the highly distinct, floral sweetness to elevate the pillowy sponge. But those floral flavors never stood out as planned. Yes, there was sweetness (honey) and a lemony note (citrus coulis) to pair with the sponge, but it still wasn’t quite enough to satisfy the more discerning palates.

Texture-wise, there was also something sorely missing — something crisp or crunchy to add contrast to the soft, fluffy textures.

Fine Foods (Hong Kong, CHINA) ★★★☆☆

It’s been a while since I last visited Fine Foods at the Royal Garden Hotel in East Tsim Sha Tsui. After getting my ramen fix at Nadaman, I thought the popular cake shop would be a convenient stop before heading home to get some work done.

I spotted some familiar creations from my previous visits years ago, but I made it clear to myself that I wanted to try some new flavors this afternoon.

Rose, watermelon, strawberry & Earl Grey ($68) — It isn’t the first time a cake shop has attempted the idea of a rose–watermelon–strawberry cake without following the mold of the patented Black Star recipe, and it won’t be the last.

The varying textures of the rose, watermelon, and strawberry weren’t bad, and the introduction of Earl Grey tea was a nice touch. However, the design — everything hidden inside a chocolate hemisphere (meant to be half of a watermelon) — made the dessert much less enjoyable to eat.

Even with my best attempt to break the chocolate crust apart, the watermelon slice still got in the way.

Pandan mango sticky rice ($64) — Much better than the previous dessert.

It had all the elements of a solid Thai-style mango sticky rice: mango, glutinous rice with a mochi-like chew, and the pandan sponge neatly combining everything into a pillowy cake. While the execution wasn’t exactly perfect, the balance of flavors and the mix of textures were enough to excite even the ordinary palate.

This was definitely a long overdue visit. While I still enjoy the consistently stable quality of Fine Foods’ pastries, a few smaller French patisseries—such as Finesse Patisserie, Relive Patisserie, among others have already quietly overtaken Fine Foods on my short list.

10 of The Best Cheesecake in Hong Kong (2026)

Just like Italian tiramisu, Hongkongers seem to have a love-and-hate relationship with cheesecake. We love it for the creamy, melt-in-your-mouth textures and unforgettable flavor combinations — yet we hate the calories that pile up after every slice. Different restaurants and cafés in Hong Kong offer their own version of this beloved dessert, and here are the best cheesecakes I’ve had the pleasure of enjoying while living in this wonderful food city.

1) Carbone
Carbone’s famous New York Lemon Cheesecake is a signature Italian-American dessert featuring a creamy, silky-smooth cheesecake base topped with a zesty layer of lemon curd. Due to its huge popularity and loyal fanbase, it has been a permanent fixture on the restaurant’s iconic dessert trolley since the opening in 2014. The cheesecake sits on a thick, firm biscuit base that delivers a satisfying crunch perfect for balancing the smooth layers above.

2) The Mandarin Cake Shop
The 1963 Mandarin Cheesecake from The Mandarin Cake Shop is arguably one of Hong Kong’s most legendary and iconic desserts in town. Introduced the same year the Mandarin Oriental Hong Kong opened, it’s made with the shop’s secret recipe and has remained one of the city’s most beloved cheesecakes for over six decades.

3) The Cheesecake Factory
The Cheesecake Factory’s Oreo® Cookies & Cream Cheesecake is widely considered one of its best around. It nails the art of balancing contrasting textures and rich ingredients: a velvety, dense baked cream cheese filling paired with a light, fluffy whipped Oreo mousse layer on top. The result is indulgent, cookie-studded bliss — creamy depth with airy, sweet momentum in every bite.

The Uji Matcha Cheesecake from Via Tokyo is a hugely popular dessert, highly touted by local food critics and dessert enthusiasts as one of the best matcha cheesecakes in Hong Kong. Unlike dense, heavy American-style versions, Via Tokyo creates a distinctly Japanese dessert prioritizing a lighter texture and a refined, sophisticated tea profile.

Gâteau Nuage ("cloud cake" in French) from Lady M New York is an award-winning, sophisticated variation of the classic New York cheesecake. It’s made for those who love the familiar flavor of cheesecake but want a noticeably lighter, less heavy texture than traditional dense baked versions.

Its topping is a smooth, glossy layer of sweetened sour cream, creating a silky finish and a gentle, refreshing tang that beautifully balances the airy, cloud-like cream cheese filling.

7) Finesse Patisserie
Finesse Patisserie is one of my favorite French pâtisseries in recent memory. Its Fromage Blanc is a signature French-inspired pastry creation by pastry chef Mandy Siu — featuring a light, smooth cream cheese filling paired with airy vanilla chantilly cream, resting on a crisp, golden-brown tart shell. It’s an absolute masterpiece that combines smooth richness and light, airy (French) elegance seamlessly.

8) Butter
Known for being exceptionally rich, dense, and creamy, the New York Cheesecake from Butter Bake Shop is a classic, decadent dessert tailored for those searching for a true American cheesecake experience. The cheesecake features an ultra-rich, dense texture paired with a vanilla cookie crumb base rather than a standard graham cracker crust, creating a distinct sweetness and a satisfying crunch.

9) Island Gourmet
The Hokkaido Cheesecake from Island Gourmet is a famous, premium signature dessert celebrated for its incredibly smooth texture and balanced, mellow flavor. Using a secret recipe, it achieves deep, satisfying cheesiness without the heavy thickness of traditional cheesecake and still maintaining an exceptionally soft, silky, light texture, and most importantly, an unforgettable melt-in-your-mouth finish.

Finesse Patisserie (Hong Kong, CHINA) ★★★★☆

Hidden in the labyrinth of narrow, uphill streets in Wanchai, Finesse Patisserie first caught my attention last year and it didn't take long for me to fall deeply in love with this French patisserie.

I was in Wanchai for a meeting this afternoon and didn't hesitate to swing by after work to see what new creations they have for the summer.

Finesse Patisserie [Hong Kong, CHINA]: The best, most amazing French-style cake/dessert shop not in a hotel in Hong Kong now.

Finesse Patisserie has become a favorite among dessert lovers for good reason. It consistently delivers the kind of French patisserie experience that feels both indulgent and effortlessly refined. From the moment I step through the door, there’s a clear sense of intention — everything is made not only for its taste, but also to appear visually stunning like a piece of artwork. Each dessert here is crafted the way classic techniques show up in each bite, balancing richness with lightness so you never feel overwhelmed, only delighted.

Finesse Patisserie [Hong Kong, CHINA]: The best, most amazing French-style cake/dessert shop not in a hotel in Hong Kong now.

Tarte au fromage blanc (焗白芝士撻) ($72) — This looks like a very simple French-style cheese tart, but they’ve done it to absolute perfection.

Finesse Patisserie [Hong Kong, CHINA]: The best, most amazing French-style cake/dessert shop not in a hotel in Hong Kong now.

The cheese tart combines a light, airy filling of smooth cream cheese with vanilla chantilly that floats atop. The cheesecake filling rests on a thick, firm tart shell, baked to perfectly crisp, golden finish. I loved how the shell delivers a heavy crunch to balance the delicate lightness up top. A truly impressive dessert that is airy yet deeply satisfying.

Kyoto (抹茶 · 芝麻) ($78) — While I’m not usually a huge fan of matcha, I was genuinely impressed by the presentation of this exquisite dessert, which brings together Uji matcha and black sesame using refined French pastry techniques.

Finesse Patisserie [Hong Kong, CHINA]: The best, most amazing French-style cake/dessert shop not in a hotel in Hong Kong now.

The composition is beautifully layered: matcha soft sponge, Kyoto matcha mousse with Japanese black sesame crémeux, a matcha chocolate coating, and pumpkin seed praline. It’s elegantly decorated with a tuile made from toasted sesame, pumpkin seeds, and puff rice, adding an extra pop of crunch. I liked the depth of matcha flavor in the mousse working wonderfully with the textures and flavors of the soft sponge and black sesame crémeux. This was another incredibly delicious dessert, even if it’s slightly less memorable to me than the Tarte au fromage blanc (just a personal preference).

Finesse Patisserie [Hong Kong, CHINA]: The best, most amazing French-style cake/dessert shop not in a hotel in Hong Kong now.

So far, the few times I’ve been able to indulge in their desserts, it’s always been a memorable experience. The flavors were thoughtful and harmonious, with delicate sweetness and clearly defined flavor profiles.

Island Gourmet (Hong Kong, CHINA) ★★★★☆

We had no immediate plans on the Saturday before Father’s Day. Little nugget’s wounds were still bothering him, so we didn’t want to risk him getting injured or anything. Going forward, the plan was simple — no plans.

As usual, I was the first to wake up. After having breakfast at a nearby cha chaan teng, I went for a little walk on my own. That little walk turned out to be much longer than I expected. It took me all the way to Admiralty, where I picked up a few things — and then, suddenly, I felt the urge to walk over to Island Gourmet, the famed dessert shop at Island Shangri-La, to grab a sweet treat for tonight.

I was hoping to get little nugget a strawberry cheesecake, but it wasn’t available this early. Instead, I picked up their signature Hokkaido cheesecake.

Island Gourmet’s Hokkaido cheesecake is a delicate, decadent dessert featuring a crisp biscuit base, airy and fluffy baked Hokkaido cheesecake filling, and a generous topping of silky Chantilly cream. It comes in a larger size, as well as this smaller one inside the round box.

The centre of the cheesecake velvety, airy, and whipped — almost weightless and mousse-like, rather than dense or sticky like a New York–style cheesecake.

It paired beautifully with the top layer of Chantilly cream and the bottom base of crumbly biscuit crust. It’s a perfectly light dessert for anyone looking for a sweet treat that melts the moment it reaches your tongue.

There is a subtle hint of yuzu in the cheesecake filling that cut through the sweetness beautifully. Time for an encore soon!

Pier Lounge Hong Kong Ocean Park Marriott Hotel (Hong Kong, CHINA) ★★★☆☆

Little nugget will be down and out for the next couple of weeks after his surgery earlier this week. He’s obviously very much on his grandparents’ minds. Even when they were enjoying dinner at Pier Lounge in the Hong Kong Ocean Park Marriott Hotel tonight, their grandson was still top of mind.

To wish him a speedy recovery, they've ordered a Black Forest Cake for him with a message on top: “You’re brave like a lion!”.

Any chocolate lover would love this.  The cake features layers of moist chocolate sponge matched perfectly with velvety chocolate mousse and cherry filling. I just wish there were a bit more of those tangy tart cherry bits hidden throughout the sponge but all in all, a pretty tasty Black Forest cake. I guess I really miss having a Black Forest cake.

Everyone’s doing their part to help Little nugget cope with his recovery. Just like his grandparents, I hope he stays strong. With his courage, I’m sure he can do it~!

Cheesy The Goat 自私蛋糕 (Hong Kong, CHINA) ★★★★☆

My quest for the best cheesecakes and the most bizarre flavored one in Hong Kong has taken me through the social media of some of the most popular online cake shops. There are some really interesting flavors out there.

One of the most bizarre (or interesting, depending on how you look at it) cheesecake options I came across was the mentaiko cheesecake (明太子芝士蛋糕) from Cheesy The Goat (自私蛋糕), an online cake shop focused solely on cheesecakes.

So, I decided to order one of Cheesy The Goat’s cheesecakes for our indulgence this week. While the mentaiko cheesecake received a lot of serious consideration, a creamy savory dessert sounded like a pretty filling late-night snack. Onto our second choice: an Oreo cheesecake (焗曲奇芝士蛋糕). That would make a bit more sense as a sweet treat.

This is Cheesy The Goat’s Oreo cheesecake 2.0. From what I’ve heard, it’s a step up from its original Fish Glue Jelly Oreo Cheesecake.

The refined version features a top layer made from crushed Oreo cookie crumbs.

The middle is a creamy Oreo cheesecake filling, and the base a baked, crisp Oreo cookie crust. Although it’s “just Oreo” from top to bottom, the different layers with slightly different textures give the dessert another dimension. The only thing I didn’t like was the light whipped cream underneath the crushed Oreo cookies. It felt a bit pointless when you already have all those creamy Oreo layers right under.

Next up, savory mentaiko cheesecake. Bring it on!

P.S.  Cheesy The Goat has 7 pickup spots across Kowloon, Hong Kong Island, and the New Territories, making their cheesecakes much more accessible than those with conventional physical stores.

Cova Pasticceria & Confetteria Festival Walk 又一城店 (Hong Kong, CHINA) ★★★★☆

Mom’s birthday falls on a public holiday this year, so we can finally give her a proper celebration on her special day. She’s a total sucker for anything with chestnut so the plan was to get her a chestnut cake. But summer is not really chestnut season making this a bit of a challenge.

With only a handful of cake shops offering chestnut birthday cakes these days, the choices were pretty slim. In the end, I decided to go with the Chestnut Harvest Cake from Cova Pasticceria & Confetteria.

This came with chestnut purée and fresh cream layered into three sponge-cake layers, then finished with chestnut cream, Italian imported marrons glacés, and little pistachio bites on top. It turned out to be a bit sweeter than I expected. But I thought different layers of the cake comes together beautifully and gives a satisfying, well-balanced mouthfeel that’s made everyone very happy.

Little nugget got his first taste of the longevity peach (壽包) this month. This was his second crack at it this week and he couldn’t be happier!

Butterfly Patisserie (Hong Kong, CHINA) ★★★★☆

Little nugget has secretly told me that they prepared a birthday cake for me from my favorite cake shop in town. After thinking about it for a moment, I realized I actually didn’t even know which shop it was, so this could be interesting.

When the puzzle was finally solved, I found that the cake was actually from Butterfly Patisserie at Rosewood Hong Kong. I’m not sure it’s my absolute No. 1 favorite in the city, but it definitely ranks extremely high on my list.

White Tea Lychee and Guava Cake — I was initially told that it was an avocado mousse cake but once the smoke cleared, it turned out to be something far more exciting: a white tea lychee, and guava cake.

What stood out was the exotic blend of flavors: lychee for its gentle sweetness, guava for its delicate floral notes, and fragrant white tea to tie everything together. The result is a dessert that feels perfectly balanced — sweet and aromatic, with just enough acidity to keep it refreshing.

When I heard the cake was from Butterfly Patisserie, I was hoping it might be their signature vanilla cake. But honestly, this was a delightful change of pace. There’s a real harmony here — solid sweetness balanced by a lively, tangy lift.

I’m especially glad my team chose this over a more filling vanilla cake for my birthday.

Alcove Coffee & Patisserie (Hong Kong, CHINA) ★★★★☆

After a quick dim sum lunch with mom in my childhood streets of Prince Edward, I set off on my own towards Sham Shui Po. My destination was a hidden foodie street with gems like Ten Noodle Shop (十大碗粥麵專家) and Heartwarming (暖心芝作).

But today, I had a different destination in mind — Alcove Coffee & Patisserie.

Tucked away like a little secret, Alcove Coffee & Patisserie is a rare kind of place where artisanal coffee and exquisite pastries share the same cozy roof. The shop is tiny but it’s decorated with such warmth and taste. Almost like you’ve stepped into someone’s cozy living room.

Behind the display counter sat a small yet intriguing selection of sweets. From a delicate chocolate tart and pound cake to the house specialty Basque cheesecake.

The dessert that stole the spotlight came in a number of flavors — original, vanilla, and black sesame. They all sounded tempting, but my mind was already set on the pistachio.

It wasn’t my first time trying a Basque cheesecake with that slight ooze in the centre. The last time I had something this beautiful was in Kaohsiung (高雄), in a backstreet café, where a slice of heavenly Basque cheesecake came layered with a gorgeous thick slab of taro purée (or cream, depending how you see it). This was nearly as mouthwatering.

Sandwiched in the middle this time was a thin layer of pistachio cream and jam. The savory notes of the pistachio really stood out prominently against the richness of the cheesecake, creating a beautifully balanced contrast.

And because this was so small — yes, I definitely thought about getting a second slice.
