After 5 days and 4 nights in Jeju Island, we finally packed our bags and started driving to the airport. Other than a couple of rainy days, I have nothing but praise for this little island. Always wanted to come here for a visit and it was nice to accomplish that with my love ones. Now, it's time to go back home and work again.
I was looking left and right to see if there's anything more I could achieve before our flight departs and from the driver seat, I spotted Jeju Kimmanbok (제주김만복 동문시장점 金滿福鮑魚飯卷) an eatery famous for its jeonbok (abalone) dishes, which I came across on my research before the trip. They were founded back in 1988 so they are considered a veteran in the business.
This branch of Jeju Kimmanbok near the Dongmun Marketplace only offers take-away option. There's no place for dine-in.
Like most restaurants in Jeju, they have a very short menu which includes their famous jeonbok cup bop (abalone cup rice), jeonbok gimbop (Korean-style sushi made with abalone, rice, steamed egg and seaweed) and ojingeo-bokkeum (squid seasoned with hot pepper sauce).
Jeonbok Gimbop (6,500 won) - Our Korean-style sushi made with abalone flavored rice and wrapped with seaweed. There's a thick slab of steamed egg custard sandwiched in the middle.
Jeonbok cup bop (7,500 won) - Their famous abalone cup rice. This came with a whole abalone on top.
There's also a version of this with sliced abalone.
I didn't have much time to decide so I quickly grabbed two of these abalone cup rice while my family waited in the car.
Turned out we were lucky to have these because we found out later that there was no restaurant at the Jeju International Airport!
This was seriously good. The rice came with really rich abalone flavor and I love the fact that they had these steamed egg custard hidden inside the rice. The creaminess of the egg custard really worked well with the tender rice. Of course, the grilled abalone on top was the icing on the cake.
Now, come to think of it, I'm seriously regretting that I didn't get more of this to enjoy on the plane.
