It wasn't easy locating Patisserie Ma Marron (literally means "My Chestnut" in French) even with my Naver GPS application. At the end, I had to pull up on a side street (coz I couldn't find the entrance nor parking lot) and take a short walk up.
I honestly didn't know what to expect from a dessert cafe housed under an old red-brick building like this one. When I finally pushed the door open, I couldn't believe what's been hidden behind the closed door. Waiting on the other end was a quaint little cafe with an amazingly warm and cozy ambience.
Patisserie Ma Marron won't be Patisserie Ma Marron without some chestnut themed desserts, right?
Apart from the signature Mont Blanc tart, there's also a small selection of pastries with chestnut including a Japanese-style roll cake (with chestnut), fresh cream cake (with chestnut called Ma Marron cake) and marron eclair; as well as some without chestnut (matcha eclair, chocolate truffle cake, lemon tart etc.).
Mont Blanc tart (6,500 won) - There's no way I would be picking something other than their Mont Blanc tart.
This reminded me of the Mont Blanc tart I had at Mont St Clair in Tokyo a few years back. Underneath the layer of chestnut vermicelli, there were fresh cream and slightly sweetened chestnut purée. Pretty decent but I was looking for a bit more variation in textures.
I'll be happy to give this place one more chance if I visit Jeju Island again in the near future. It's not just the wonderful vibe. Their eclair, mille feuille and opera cake are all worth the drive (5 to 10-minute from city centre).
