Santa Lucia Niederdorf (Zurich, SWITZERLAND) ★★★☆☆

After spending more than two weeks on the road, everyone was kind of relieved that it's almost over. One last night in Zurich and last night of this trip for that matters, we just wanted something simple for dinner. Let's finish early, go pack our bags and crash!

Founded in 1965, Santa Lucia is an Italian restaurant chain with 12 branches across Switzerland, 8 of those are actually inside Zurich.

Hidden in the cobbled alleyways of Zurich's historic old town, Santa Lucia Niederdorf is famous for its wood-fire pizza and homemade pasta.

I love an airy, light-flooded restaurant with lots of natural lights.

There's actually an outdoor patio just 20 staircases down from us but since most of us were already hobbling after all the walking on this trip, thanks but no thanks. Indoor suits us just fine.

Linguine, prawns and cherry tomatoes tossed in a creamy tomato sauce, with a little sprinkle of basil leaves. That's going to be my first supper in Zurich. I hope to be back soon coz I've always enjoyed visiting Zurich. There's not a whole lot to see here but I like the calming atmosphere around the city. Slow living, I bet all Hongkongers could use some of that.

Zurich's Old Town is small but there's plenty to see around here.

Just now, there's a small festival going on this week showcasing different kinds of street food.

Confiserie Sprüngli Bahnhofstrasse (Zurich, SWITZERLAND) ★★★☆☆

I was looking for some nice souvenirs to bring back home and since we have been vacationing in Switzerland for the entire week, I couldn't help but think of chocolate as the perfect gift.

Confiserie Sprüngli is a luxury chocolate brand originated from Zurich and they have been spoiling chocolate lovers around the world for 175 years.

I could tell most of the customers here were tourists from different corners of the world.

Apart from their chocolate, their macarons are also a top seller, highlighted by their signature Luxemburgerli (mini-macarons).

Their Luxemburgerli, which is an airy mini-macaroon filled with a light cream made of fresh, natural ingredients comes with different flavors such as Bourbon Vanilla, chocolate, caramel, raspberry and champagne gold.

Of course, I won't be leaving Confiserie Sprüngli without a box of these.

They have a brand new (Flavor of the Month) of Luxemburgerli out every month and this month, they just unveiled this Maracuja Chocolate flavor.

This came with a very elegant bronze color. Not bad.

Confiserie Sprüngli has so much more than just chocolate and mini-macarons to offer. Look at these adorable sweets.

On the second floor of this Bahnhofstrasse branch on Paradeplatz is a classic European style tea salon.

Some homemade pastries and cold cut to go with our drinks?

Not today. We were still so stuffed from our lunch at Zeughauskeller so just a frosty vanilla shake to get me through this hot summer day.

I love the view of bustling Paradeplatz from up top but almost time to go.

Conditorei Schober (Zurich, SWITZERLAND) ★★★★☆

I have a list of cafes I'd love to visit whenever I'm in Zurich and on top of that list is Conditorei Schober, a traditional chocolatier, patisserie and café in the middle of the Old Town.

Known as the "sweet corner" by the locals, Conditorei Schober is a stalwart in Zurich's dessert menu having dated back to the mid 19th century as a confectionary and coffee shop. The historic café has since been revamped by restaurateur Michel Péclard while keeping some of the history intact.

Traces of the past can still be found at Schober including the old-fashioned cashier, which has been kept in very good shape.

And the first-floor tea salon took us on a trip down memory lane.

One thing is certain - they have some of the best French tartes and pastries in Zurich.

Caramel Fleur de Sel (CHF 8.5) - Love the nice balance of sweetness and bitterness from the caramel and chocolate mousse. Very delicate and silky.

Schokoladen Trio (CHF 8.5) - A nice combination of chocolate, mango and raspberry mousse sitting on a lovely sponge cake with various flavors (pistachio, mango?). A very insta-worthy dessert!

St. Honore (CHF 8) - Probably the less successful one of the three. The chantilly cream looked a little messy but nothing wrong with the flavors though.

It's still pretty early for lunch so we should have enough time to catch Grossmünster, Zürich Town Hall and a couple other attractions before our lunch booking at Zeughauskeller.

Mesa (Zurich, SWITZERLAND) ★★★☆☆

For more than a decade, Mesa has been the go-to address for haute cuisine in Zurich. I first heard of the restaurant when Austrian-born chef Marcus G. Lindner was at the helm. He was brought in to lead Mesa's kitchen back in 2006 and quickly made the restaurant one of most classy fine-dining establishments in Zurich. After awarded two stars in the 2012 Michelin Guide, chef Lindner left for The Alpina Gstaad to become their opening executive chef. Chef Antonio Colaianni (3 years), Maximilian Klein (1 year) and Marcel Schmitutz (1 year) all followed his footsteps to take the reigns at Mesa with different degree of success (by then dropped to one star) until earlier this year when chef Sebastian Rösch arrived.

German-born Sebastian Rösch previously worked in the kitchens of Ecco (Ascona) and now-defunct Spice (Gourmet restaurant on the first floor of the Hotel Rigiblick in Zurich) before joining Mesa. His cooking style is considered a great fit at Mesa with the fine dining restaurant now switching to more of a contemporary eatery with international influences. This is where chef Rösch seems to fit in well with his classical oriented approach but interpreted in a slightly contemporary manner. I guess in layman terms, we should be expecting a more casual cosmopolitan cuisine that's more playful and produce driven.

Mesa was just a 7 to 8 minute walk from our hotel so I decided not to drive tonight and instead walk over in the rain. Turned out we're not the first to arrive despite showing up at 6. A group (of nearly 20 guests) from Taiwan was already there ahead of us.

We're offered a choice between 3 (CHF 95), 4 (CHF 115) or 5 courses (CHF 135). Since everyone was more tired than hungry, we all went with the three-course menu with our own choice of starter, entrée and main.

Some interesting nibbles to start off the meal, first with some dehydrated peach topped with a dash of beetroot purée, horseradish and hazelnut.

Those were accompanied by some crispy pork cheek.

Our last amuse bouche was a little tofu salad with different types of tomatoes, cheese and mixed peppers. These looked like a sign to come that it won't be a traditional meal after all.

Our starters were a mix of classic and fusion dishes beginning with seared line-caught tuna that was served with avocado and green mango. The sauce was a chili soy with mild spiciness that provided the lightly seared tuna something extra to work with. Not bad.

The other starter was pâté of poussin from Grison with homemade brioche and cherries marinated with local vinegar. This was a little lighter than what I've expected.

Entreé again provided an interesting mix of classic and contemporary dishes. Most of us went with their Secreto pata negra, a dish with pork collar, walnuts, kale and cheese all on a bed of fregola risotto. Some Mediterranean flavors there further highlighted by the alp gras oil on the bottom.

I personally had the sole fillet with lemon beurre blanc, parsnips and leek. This was pretty tasty with some lovely acidity coming from the lemon butter sauce and the baby leeks provided some interesting grassy garden note to the fish.

For main dish, almost everyone went with Angus beef aged 30 months served with mushrooms, parsley root and ratte potatoes in what I thought was a light red wine reduction. Not bad from the little corner I stole from Jelloman.

Again I went with the fusion dish featuring Breton monkfish from Roscoff, wrapped with seaweed and served in an aromatic Anapurna curry broth. There were seasonal vegetables like okra, Indian cress, carrot, green peas, broccoli, corn and pumpkin in there as well. Did I miss anything?

Like my first dish with seared tuna, avocado and green mango, I thought there was a bit of Thai inspiration in this dish. Personally, I'm not a big fan of fusion cuisine (except Japanese-French) especially the mix of modern European and Thai, and they're going to the well a little too often in this meal.

Young chef Sebastian Rösch came out to greet us at this point and introduced us to his petite fours, a combination of macaron with coffee cream, chocolate brownie and chocolate ball infused with rose water.

I thought everybody enjoyed dinner tonight although it's not the elegant fine-dining experience we were all hoping for. Service stood out as exceptional throughout the night, which was indeed worthy of their star but the cuisine wasn't enough to warrant the same accolade, at least not based on the small sample of dishes we had this evening. It could be just an off-night from the kitchen but the more I looked at these pictures again, the more I felt like the elegant cooking that used to set Mesa apart from the others was long gone when Lindner and Colaianni both stepped through those doors.

Note: It's worth noting that Mesa retained its Michelin star in the 2018 guide despite the change of guard.

EMA House Hotel Suites (Zurich, SWITZERLAND)

Zurich is the final destination of our two-week journey in Italy and Switzerland. It's not my first visit to the capital city of Switzerland but it's the first for mom and little nugget so I'm going to make the most of it.

After spending a ton of time looking for the right hotel in Zurich, I soon realized that there is no right hotel in the city. Sure, there are some nice hotels in Zurich but they're either out of my budget or simply not in a desirable area. Something's got to give. EMA House Hotel Suites checks most boxes, as it's just a short walk to our dinner venue, Mesa on our first night. It is an aparthotel so there's plenty of room for little one to run around and the underground parking will save me some major headaches of parking on the streets. Things are all good, right? Almost but not quite.

First and foremost, I really like the living room of our 1-bedroom apartment.

Right behind the living room is the dining area (including open kitchen).

The open kitchen design is perfect for space utilization.

Little one couldn't stop running around and explore the space around here.

The only knock about this place (well, not their fault) is the fact that we have 3 adults and 1 baby, and there is only one bedroom here. It was an well appointed one with elegant design and enough natural lights to work with but yours truly will be spending time on the couch for the next two nights.

This side of the aparthotel overlooks the front entrance of the hotel and the main road, Stampfenbachstrasse.

Did I mention that this is an ensuite equipped with a full bathroom?

I just love a bathroom with marbled walls. The added touch of sophistication creates a sense of luxury and refinement that is timeless.

While I was busy taking photos all around the apartment, little one showed up catching me by surprise! 😲😲

Perhaps the only real knock about this place is the view or the lack of it. As it is situated on the quiet side of the city, there is really nothing eye-catching from the windows.

When I looked back, we really started falling in love with staying in an aparthotel following this trip to Europe with little nugget around. Good aparthotels don't grow on trees but we were fortunate to have found EMA House Hotel Suites. It's a place I won't mind staying at for an extensive period of time......say, a year! 😁😁
