Restaurant Almacita (Valence, FRANCE) ★★★★☆

We knew we would be stopping by Valence on our way to Avignon, but what we didn’t know was how late we ended up getting there. It was 1:50pm when I finished parking our car! 🚗

We were supposed to have lunch in Valence’s Old Town but with most restaurants already wrapping up their lunch service, it was going to be slim picking. Fortunately for us, we were able to find Restaurant Almacita, a South American casual dining restaurant and gastro bar on Grande Rue, just a few steps off the shopping street of Rue Emile Augier.

While we were still bragging about our luck for finding this hidden gem, our server came up to take our orders and she speaks fluent English! Another huge bonus! 👍🏻👍🏻

Salmon, citrus, herbs, zucchini (€13.6) – Little nugget had the grilled salmon fillet served with citrus butter, garden herbs and zucchini. This was no ordinary Joe though as the dish came with really nice presentation including a generous portion of salmon roes. The flavors? Just really well-balanced and very delicious.

Cod, coconut milk, carrot, patatas bravas (€25) – I had the grilled cod fish myself. This was served in a creamy shellfish sauce flavored with coconut milk, along with crispy carrots and my favorite patatas bravas. Another outstanding dish from the kitchen.

Amazonian salad (€13) – Jelloman thought she had too much to eat just five days into our trip and she decided to have this really boring salad with mango, tomatoes, purple onions and garden green served in a citrusy dressing. Yawn~!

After the meal, we spent some time trotting around the streets of Valence. La Maison des Têtes which was just next door to our lunch spot was certainly worth a visit for its architectural excellence and rich heritage.

The Cathedral of Valence built in 1850 was another landmark in the city, which was just a stone’s throw away. Unfortunately, it was currently under renovation.

We have one final stop to make before leaving Valence, Patisserie Guillet, a popular patisserie in the area which we had the pleasure of visiting back in 2016. Eight years later, we’re bringing little one along with us to experience their exquisitely crafted French pastries.

Tango Argentinian Steak House Elements (Hong Kong, CHINA) ★★★☆☆

After not seeing my buddy V for nearly three years during the pandemic, we are meeting for the second time in 2023 already. Tonight's dinner will be a celebration for my birthday last week.

Both V and I agreed to have a quiet and simple dinner tonight. When I narrowed things down to Elements Shopping Mall, he immediately proposed Tango Argentinian Steak House as our dinner venue, which I gladly accepted.

I have never been to this branch of Tango before so I was a bit pleasantly surprised with its cozy vibe.
V arrived just ahead of me and was enjoying his bottle of red already. Following a nice chat, it didn't take long for us to nail down the dishes we wanted to order.

Calamari Salad – I wanted something green to start so this salad with grilled squids, field greens, avocado and garlic aioli was perfect. The squids were really tender and the dressing was not as garlicky as we first feared. My only complaint was that it could have a bit more avocado in there perhaps.

Hokkaido Scallops – The slices of Hokkaido scallops were so fresh and sweet, meshing well with the nice acidity from the yuzu leche de tigre.

Gaucho Platter – There were three different cuts in the platter, rump steak, fillet and skirt, a total of 19.oz of meat. It was our most anticipated dish of the evening but sadly, it didn't come thru for us. The rump steak, in particular was really rough and chewy.

V and I updated each other on our recent happenings and we made a few jokes about our future. Good times pass so quickly and it was time to hit the ground running again. I am truly blessed to have a bunch of good friends like V around the globe. This year, greetings began to pour in a few hours before my birthday and even some of the "rare customers" like AP whom I had a serious crush on back in our university days, texted me on my birthday to wish me well. I guess when we get older, we tend to miss our old friends and old times more.

Mono by Ricardo Chaneton (Hong Kong, CHINA) ★★★★☆

Agent-I and I have been talking about meeting up for dinner for months and after a couple of postponements, we finally agreed on a number of days that would work for the both of two. Problem? We couldn't find a table at any of our shortlisted restaurants for the next 2 months. Just when I thought we were going to postpone again, she got a surprise call from Mono saying that they have a table for us tonight, thanks to a last-minute cancelation.

I have always wanted to come back to Mono after my first and only visit on their opening week. But for the last couple of months, it was impossible to get in any fine-dining restaurants in the city, Mono included. I am guessing "revenge spending" on good food is really in full swing now.

We were so eager to find out about tonight's tasting menu.

As soon as we finished ordering, our server came over to show us a basket of mashua, a sort-of bell-shaped root vegetable from Peru which has been cultivated and used for Peruvian dishes for over 1,500 years. The locals use them for everything, even desserts!

Of course there was a reason why she showed us the mashua cuz they were featured in our amuse bouche.

Underneath the thin slices of mashua were sea urchin (yes!) and clams, finished off nicely with some chili dust. Not bad.

We didn't have to wait very long to see one of Chef Chaneton's signature dishes - Gamba Rojas, his famous red prawns. This was a refined version of what I had in their opening week. The Spanish red prawns, very lightly cooked, was matched with tiger milk, a crustacean jelly made primarily with the prawn's head and coral, and diced yam (Latin American version of it anyways). The bouncy and crunchy texture of the prawns were complemented brilliantly by the lovely acidity of the tiger milk (lime) and there was the extra spicy kick to tie everything up delightfully.

Yes, it was nice to get this right out of the gate. Very nice start.

The second dish of the tasting menu was variations of green peas with Mexican nopal (some sort of cactus) beautifully topped with Imperial caviar. I like the clean flavors of the green peas and the crunch was really nice but there was nothing to back it up. I thought, even the salt from the caviar didn't do enough of a job to elevate the flavors of the dish.

At this point, we were presented with the restaurant's signature sourdough bread, housemade daily with 3 types of quinoa and served with some of the finest olive oil.

Very very pillowy. I think I can really sleep on it...

Bread was followed immediately by Blue lobster from Brittany, which was superbly cooked. It was paired with chayote purée, a relatively light lobster sauce and finished with a sprinkle of kari gosse (French curry powder). Not bad.

Next up was Roscoff onion that was cooked to absolute perfection. The exterior of the onion was almost completely caramelized while the centre was still soft and moist. There was obviously a reason why Roscoff onion, best known for its sweet and unique flavor, was such a prized ingredient. Combining with black sesame, mushroom and shallot cream, it gave the dish great depth of flavors. (My favorite dish of the night there).

Following the onion dish, our server brought over a trolley and started preparing a mole sauce from table side. There were a total of 65 ingredients from the original recipe of the sauce but they trimmed it down to 21 ingredients including spices, aubergine purée, chocolate, nuts and activated charcoal, and chili paste.

The dark colored sauce ready to be served with our next dish.

Here French morel mushroom was stuffed with foie gras and minced chicken, and served with buckwheat, pork cracking and a pool of the mole sauce that was just freshly made. A very delicate dish with a nice mix of exciting flavors and textures.

Our fish course is none other than the house specialty, Chef Chaneton's aged monkfish. While Agent-I and I were a little disappointed with the small portion we got (it's about a third of what we used to get), we were certainly not disappointed with the meatiness of the fish fillet at all.

The second serving came in a traditional Mexican infladita (street food snack) with monkfish mousse (made with meat from its head and tail) as filling, topped nicely with the same Béarnaise sauce.

Our meat course was Racan pigeon, which was interestingly paired with chimichurri sauce made with parsley and fresh oregano. But what I didn't like the part with the yuca and pigeon breast on top (upper right corner of the dish).

There was a second serving of the pigeon, the leg which was stuffed with pigeon mousse and matched with capers and chili. I thought this was almost better than the pigeon breast.

After what tasted like buckwheat tea (it was a beverage by the name of Mate cocido) following our pigeon dish, we were ready for our palate cleanser.

Cucumber sorbet, clementine, mint leaf and some crispy flakes (chocolate).

In case you didn't know, Mono does their own chocolate from fresh cocoa beans. Both of us were really looking forward to tonight's chocolate dessert and it definitely didn't disappoint. Chocolate cream with rosemary ice-cream and Sicilian olive oil served under a chocolate web. Simple but very very tasty thanks to the richness of the chocolate.

I thought we were done in the dessert department but it ain't over until the fat lady sings.

It's almost two months since I turned 25 but I didn't get to celebrate it with Agent-I at the time so she made sure that I got my birthday wish tonight.

Creamy tonka bean mousse with chocolate ganache and cocoa nibs. That's a combination that never let us down. Sweet but not too sweet. Love the silky tonka bean mousse in the middle that meshed so well with the bitterness of the chocolate.

Another sweet bite to end the meal on a sweet note.

Many thanks to my foodie friend for the very nice treat. It's a couple of months after my birthday but I could always wait for amazing food like these.

Cali-Mex Bar & Grill Discovery Bay (Hong Kong, CHINA) ★★★☆☆

We have a double header coming up later this afternoon. First, we will be building some sand castles at Discovery Bay's Sam Pak Wan Beach (三白灣) and then, we will head to Sunny Bay for a walking tour of Yam O (陰澳) and Luk Keng Bay (鹿頸灣). But before we get started, it was time to fill up our tanks at Star Mart Discovery Bay (愉景灣北商場) first.

It was just my second visit to Discovery Bay and first to its northern side. Not surprisingly, it wasn't nearly as crowded as Discovery Bay Plaza; yet there were enough restaurants and bars to keep us happy.

Lunch at Cali-Mex Bar and Grill started off with some homemade nachos. Haven't had these for years!

A vanilla shake to cool things off. I thought this was a little light and foamy. I love thicker shakes like the ones from Triple Os or Five Guys.

Baked Lobster Tail - The lobster tail was grilled with spinach, cream and parmesan cheese. I thought there was some diced mango on top to go with the parmesan cheese too. Not bad.

Chicken wings - Had the choice between buffalo, smoky barbecue and cajun, and we gladly took the smoky BBQ sauce. The wings certainly weren't bad but the sauce was a little too gluey for my liking.

Chicken Quesadillas - Finally, something more authentically Mexican. We had a choice of
beef, chicken, pork, fish or shrimp and much to little nugget's delight, we ordered the one with fillings of grilled chicken. This was really nice. Soft and fluffy with lots of cheese in the middle. Felt like we were having pizza.

Beer battered fish and chips - Always a crowd pleaser. The deep-fried fish fillets were borderline OK but the fries rocked! Very tasty as they have just come out of the fryer.

Of course, the objective of our trip to Discovery Bay wasn't Mexican food. It was a chance for little one and his friends to soak up the sun!

Time to start building those castles together!

You want some help, son?

As usual, everyone gave up on it before the base of a sand castle was ever built.

Next up, we returned to Sunny Bay for the second half of the doubleheader - Yam O (陰澳) and Luk Keng Bay (鹿頸灣). Honestly, I've never been there my whole life so I'm letting little nugget lead the way on this one...
