Ikseon-dong (益善洞), one of the oldest address in Seoul got a new lease of life thanks to a modern makeover in the last few years. With an influx of trendy cafés, restaurants and boutiques, the labyrinth of narrow alleys and century-old Hanok (traditional Korean houses) in the area have become one of the most popular spots for young locals. It was getting a little dark (and late) to start our exploration in Ikseon-dong but like the old saying goes, it's better late than never.
There are quite a number of iconic cafés and restaurants to visit inside this small, packed area of Ikseon-dong and one of those can't-miss ones is a bakery café called Mil Toast House (밀토스트집).
Simply look for the bread logo in front of the café (as there's no signage).
Like most cafés in Ikseon-dong, Mil Toast House is housed under an old Hanok. They try to get a little more natural daylight into the cafe by installing a few glass rooflights on the ceiling to create a more bright, daylight-filled atmosphere (which didn't get unnoticed despite it was already dark).
The café offers hand-drip coffee on top of its small collection of fruit tea, shabet, marmalade and flavored milk.
I went with their silky smooth, chestnut flavored milk (7,500 won) while Jelloman had the refreshing, iced grape fruit shabet (8,500 won).
Out of all the drinks we got, we found the almond mocha (7,500 won) to be the most satisfying.
Steamed bread and Soufflé French toast are two signature dishes that truly put Mil Toast House on Seoul's culinary map.
I got a close look at how they prepared their signature Soufflé French toast up close and personal.
The cooking part really reminded me a lot of our beloved Japanese style soufflé pancakes.
I thought the French toast was absolutely filled with eggy aroma and the cream cheese topped with fresh strawberries, blueberries and a thin layer of blueberry jelly wasn't bad either.
But obviously the soufflé French toast is the crown jewel here and I can definitely see why. Its soft custard-like texture was an amazing match with the crispy crust on the outside.
The bread rolls steamed in bamboo baskets are another popular item at Mil Toast House but too bad we were way too full to take on more food at this point.

We went here in Sept 2018.. It was one of my FAV places to eat at in Seoul!! I had the steamed bread with chestnuts!! And peanut milk! I wish we could have gone back a second, third.. etc, time but we only spent a week in Seoul. This place was truly AMAZING and I recommend it to all of my friends and others traveling to Seoul!!
ReplyDeleteAgree, it was an amazing bakery cafe! It took me way too long to finally get this place checked out. Will definitely try their steamed bread with chestnut (Hopefully very soon when the pandemic is over!)...
