Sum Tarr Café (Jeju City, SOUTH KOREA) ★★★☆☆

It's my first time visiting Jeju Island. While I'm super excited about my visit, I'm also very curious of its cafe scene. I know it's not going to be as dynamic as the one in Seoul but if it's half as good, it will already make me a very happy camper.

The first dessert spot and cafe I got to visit on the island was Sum Tarr. I basically came across this little pie and tart specialist while I was dining next door at Sisters Noodles (More on that later).

I won't call this a very spacious cafe but it's adequately sized.

Of course, I was more interested in what was inside that display counter.

Sum Tarr's bread and butter is their signature egg tart. Priced at 3,300 won (~HK$22), it's certainly not cheap.

It's a little like a Portuguese pastel de nata.

They also offer different flavors of tarts including peanut and chocolate, green tea, carrot and cream cheese, canola jam and hallabong jam (3,500 won - 4,200 won).

Each of these boxes of four (called Western or Eastern Jeju pack depending on the combination of flavors) is going for 15,000 won each. Again, not cheap!

While I won't pay 15,000 won for four tarts (despite the colorful fillings), I will gladly pay for this. It's a layered coffee cake (5,000 won). My server said something about a tiramisu so I assume he's comparing this to an Italian tiramisu. But frankly, it was nothing like one. The cake did come with layers of coffee flavored sponge and creamy cheese-like mousse but combining together, it didn't taste like the classic Italian dessert at all.

The take-away box had "Voix Douce" printed on top (instead of Sum Tarr). I am guessing the cafe is under the same ownership as Voix Douce Bakery and Cafe at Days Hotel in Seogwipo.

Sum Tarr Café opens daily from 10am to 10:30pm.

I won't call this a complete success but it's a start to my exploration of Jeju Island's dessert and cafe scene in the right direction.
