Won Grandma Bossam Myeongdong (Seoul, SOUTH KOREA) ★★☆☆☆

Like most of our trips to Seoul, I tried to make sure that we cover everything from barbecued meat, Korean fried chicken, bibimbap, bossam, jokbal and more in our itinerary. It's no easy task but that's what we have been doing to maximize our trips. After a late Korean fried chicken meal last night, we turned our attention to Won Grandma Bossam, a bossam and noodle joint in the heart of the Myeongdong shopping area. Our goal was to kill two birds with one stone, bossam and jokbal all in the same meal.

Opened as a small bossam restaurant at the end of Hwanghak-dong back in 1975, Won Grandma Bossam warmed the heart of many local Seoulists with her warm meat and crispy kimchi, and so the tradition continues. Nowadays, the brand boasts no less than 50 stores around Seoul. Some are just kiosks that offer take-away and delivery service while others like this one in Myeongdong, it's a formal restaurant with dine-in options.

The food menu here offers some affordable lunch sets including their Bossam set (12,000 won) along with a la carte items.

Bossam set – This was obviously one of the more popular choice here, featuring the grandma's signature bossam.

The set came with a bean sprout and tofu soup which was tomato based with a little bit of spicy kick.

A bowl of steamed multi-grain rice with some pumpkin in the middle.

The highlight was supposed to be the bossam, sliced pork that was steamed. But everyone agreed that the pork was a bit rough.

Pork kimchi jjigae set – I had the Korean stew myself. It's basically the same set but instead of the sliced pork, it came with a sizzling hot stew with kimchi, tofu and pork.

The extra heat from the kimchi meshed well with the steamed rice. So addictive!

Perilla oil buckwheat noodles – Jelloman had the chilled buckwheat noodles with perilla oil, another popular dish here.

Jokbal – The pig's trotters cooked with soy sauce and spices were a bit rubbery for me, adding to my disappointment from the bossam earlier.

It just didn't have the perfect proportion of skin, fat and meat. I am starting to miss Ihwasoo Jeongtong Yukgaejang, the bossam and jokbal restaurant in Namdaemun that we used to visit a lot during our previous visits now. The place was so convenient for us and sorry grandma, their sliced pork and pig trotters were so much tastier!
