Cafe Onion Seongsu (Seoul, SOUTH KOREA) ★★★★☆

I am really excited about our Day 3 itinerary today. Both Seongsu-dong (聖水洞) and Seoul Forest have been on my radar screen since the start of COVID so it's an itch I am happy to scratch on this trip.



We left our hotel early as planned and took the Line 2 metro straight to Seongsu Station. And our first destination, Cafe Onion, was just an easy 5-minute walk away.

The writing is on the wall for me when it comes to which drink to order from this popular bakery cafe in Seongsu, their signature milk tea.

This branch of Cafe Onion has industrial chic written all over it. I guess that's hardly a surprise considering it was formerly a metal shop before being converted into a coffee shop cum bakery cafe.

They have all kinds of bakery goods, sweet and savory sitting on the counter.

Some of the signature items here include their squid-ink brioche "Black Crunch" with walnuts, cream cheese and glutinous rice (black) and "Pandoro" with vanilla beans, sugar powder and butter (white).

While Jelloman lined up for our breakfast and drinks, I went upstairs to the rooftop to find ourselves a table.

Iced milk tea (6,500 won) – It tasted a lot like royal milk tea with a hint of honey and there was a bit of minty note thanks to the mint leaf on top. Very nice.

Hey, somebody stole my milk tea!

Pandoro (5,500 won) – Vanilla beans, sugar powder and butter. Not really that special except for the eye-catching presentation.

Ansel Chouchou "ICE" (6,000 won) – A cream puff with fresh homemade ice-cream sitting on top of a brioche with a caramelized crust, that tasted both sweet and savory almost like a Basque cheesecake. Not bad.

Gongju Chestnut Bread (5,500 won) – The star of the meal (along with my iced milk tea).

This came with a pineapple bun-like crust on top and a soft, pillowy and chestnut filled brioche on the bottom.

Very tasty. 

This was a pretty good brunch and I was delighted to finally have my milk tea fix after three days in Seoul. Now, let's see what Seongsu has in store for us next.
