Kkanbu Chicken Bukchangdong (Seoul, SOUTH KOREA) ★★★☆☆

We were supposed to have take-away maki rolls for dinner tonight but with our flight arriving about an hour ahead of the scheduled time (that probably never happened to me before in my life), we had the unexpected luxury of dining out together for our first meal in Seoul.

It’s been nearly four years since we last visited Seoul and our first impression was that the city has undergone quite a bit of changes through COVID. Some of restaurants and shops we used to frequent were gone leaving vacant spaces and memories behind. The Namdaemun area we grew to know since 2015 (when little nugget was born) didn’t take the same hit like tourist hotspots Myeongdong and Sinsadong did. In fact, the dining scene here has gotten slightly better for a change. But for our first night, we decided to go in a safer direction by visiting a familiar spot, Kkanbu Chicken Bukchangdong. It was the same way we started our trip back in 2018. After all, one can’t go wrong with Korean fried chicken and beer in Seoul, right?

Kkanbu Chicken is the biggest Korean fried chicken chain in the country. They serve a very simple menu of 15 different flavors of fried chicken and a limited selection of side dishes. That’s enough for us considering none of us was particularly hungry after the flight.

Original crunch wings and sticks – The restaurant’s most popular fried chicken dish with crispy crusted chicken wings and drumsticks. There were aromatic herbs and spices added to the seasoning so we all experienced some numbness to our tongues after gobbling up a few pieces.

This guy seemed to think that the wings were pretty tasty!

Sweet chicken – The roast chicken was all sold out so we took a flyer of this deboned chicken tender dish that was finished off with a sweet honey glaze.

I have to admit, I didn’t enjoy these double breaded chicken tenders very much. The batter was way too thick for me and I thought they were a bit dry with such a small dose of honey sauce on top.

Fish cake soup – Something for mom as she doesn’t enjoy eating greasy stuff. This came with an assortment of fish cakes in different shapes and forms, but unfortunately for mom, the broth ((according to her) had quite a bit of spicy kick to it.

It wasn’t our greatest dining experience in Seoul but we were all just happy to be back in the city that we love dearly. And we look forward to what’s in store for us in the next few days.
