We’re counting down the days until my sister leaves town, and trying our best to meet up at least a couple of times over the remaining weekends. As usual, I was the one making the call for our dining venue this afternoon and my pick was Modern Shanghai Imperial (御‧ 家上海), a newly opened Shanghainese restaurant at VWalk.
Thanks to the reasonable prices here, the place was absolutely packed for lunch. Luckily, we were offered a VIP room free of charge.
Roasted bran dough with peanuts and black fungus (四喜烤麩) ($68) – One of my favorite starters from a Shanghainese restaurant. These were really spongy and flavorful.
Signature steamed xiao long bao (金牌小籠包) ($58) – Little one's favorite and he was all over them.
Pork dumplings in chili oil (紅油炒手) ($58) – The sudden burst of spicy kick was pretty nice.
Sautéed string beans with minced pork and chili (乾煸四季豆) ($88) – Some veggies to offset the meat dishes. Not bad.
Traditional braised pork balls in brown sauce (張大千紅燒獅子頭) ($98) – Little one has fallen in love with the "Lion's head" recently. While it wasn't as meaty and delicious as the one at Wuzhuang (吳莊), the gluey brown sauce kind of (partially) made up for it.
Shanghainese beef pies (大上海牛肉餅) ($52) – One of the last dishes to arrive. Some of the wrappers holding the beef broth were found broken here. 🙈🙈
Braised chicken and pork dumplings in chicken consommé (濃湯砂鍋雲吞雞) ($208) – Everyone wanted something soupy on a cold winter afternoon so this was perfect. Not surprisingly, the broth was really rich and creamy.
Deep-fried soufflés with banana and red bean paste (高力豆沙香蕉) ($60) – Most of us wanted to end the meal on a sweet note so we ordered two desserts to share. The first was our beloved deep-fried soufflé balls with fillings of mashed banana and red bean paste. It was very light and fluffy. 👍👍
Red bean paste pancakes (豆沙鍋餅) ($52) – Equally good were the crispy pancakes with red bean paste in the middle.
I was relieved to find that the bill came in a little less than $1,000. It's no easy feat considering we have eight hungry people in the group. That reason alone, this place is already worth a return visit.
