Jack in the Donuts Akihabara (Tokyo, JAPAN) ★★☆☆☆

It’s been over a decade since we last set foot in Akihabara (秋葉原), a district in Tokyo known for vibrant otaku culture and electronics. We decided to stop by so our little nugget could soak up the vibe.

While he continued working on the crawl machines, I had another mission to accomplish with very little time.

Continuing with my theme of donut hunting, I decided to trot over to Jack in the Donuts located in Corridor Yodobashi Akiba, the south passageway connecting the central entrance and Showa-dōri entrance of Akihabara Station.

Jack in the Donuts has been a pioneer in the donut making industry in Tokyo with over 15 years of experience.

They are best known for their colorful and creative doughnut flavors.

Malasada macadamia nuts (275yen) – When it comes to doughnuts, I like them as simple and old-school as possible.

But not this time. I am trying out this Malasada, a Portuguese-style deep-fried doughnut sprinkled with powdered sugar on top. Like a typical doughnut, this has a soft, fluffy texture and filled with a sweet, custardy filling.

But malasadas are usually lighter and fluffier because they are made with a dough that often includes eggs and is sometimes enriched with milk or butter. This results in a texture that tastes more like a cake or muffin than a traditional yeast or cake doughnut.

I guess malasada is not really my cup of tea. I first thought it would come with a ton of macadamia-infused cream adding an incredibly nutty flavor to the dough, but sadly, that just wasn't the case.
