We are meeting up with another family for a yakiniku dinner tonight in Omotesando. Mom wasn't feeling so good so we got her a cab to send her back to our hotel. And here I was wandering around Harajuku (原宿) with about half an hour to spend. Guess how I decided to spend it?
I'm Donut? is arguably one of the most popular home-grown doughnut shops in Japan. Famous for its light and airy "nama donuts" (生ドーナツ)" with a slightly chewy texture, they were nearly impossible to get our hands on from the Nakameguro branch. However, from my recent trips to Tokyo, I discovered that its Harajuku branch near Meiji Jingu Gyoen (明治神宮御苑) is the place to go if you want to get your hand (and mouth) on these fluffy doughnuts (thanks to the kitchen one floor up from the shop).
Prosciutto (420 yen) – “Nama” (生) means “raw” or “fresh” in Japanese, and in this case, it refers to the incredibly soft, fluffy, and melt-in-your-mouth texture of these donuts. Unfortunately, this was the only donut they've left, a savory one made with ham and olive.
The donut came with this soft and pilowy texture (but not chewy like a nama donut). My first bite revealed that it was filled with chopped olives and what I thought was capers in the middle. So, a fair amount of acidity to go with the delicate, savory flavor and slightly sweet undertone of the ham. Interesting. That's all I could say.
I'm glad I can finally cross this off my list despite the very little time I have before dinner. My only regret was that it wasn't the sweet nama donut I was looking for.
