I had to rush through my meal at Wuzhuang (吳莊) last time in order to catch my train back to Hong Kong. Tonight, no such problem as we have all the time in the world to enjoy the food here.
The venue is slightly different for us tonight as we have spent almost the entire afternoon here at Injoy (卓悦匯). Comparing to its sister restaurant at Link CentralWalk (領展中心), the lighting was noticeably darker and the tables were much closer to each other.
Hangzhou style braised lion’s head (揚州獅子頭) (¥39) – One of the dishes I tried last time at their Link CentralWalk branch and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The meatball was, well very meaty and I like the crust which wasn’t too crispy.
Peking duck (北京烤鴨) (¥88) – To me, Wuzhuang is more of a jack-of-all-trade Chinese restaurant so they have dishes from all around Mainland China. Peking duck is probably not their strong suit but for $88, we were more than happy to see what they had in store for us.
The usual condiments of scallion, cucumber, melon, sugar and hoisin but no hawthorn jelly (山楂啫喱) tonight I am afraid. For someone who’s not crazy about Peking duck, I thought it was OK. The meat was juicy and tender enough, working well with the pancake and condiments. I could live with the absence of smokiness from the fruit wood.
Braised pork belly (稻草肉) (¥59) – Really fatty and with the thick meat jus that came with it, we all knew it was going to be very heavy and it was!
Sautéed choy sum in clay pot (砂煲菜心) (¥28) – Some veggies to keep us healthy.
Fried rice with preserved meat (臘味炒飯) (¥33) – In Hong Kong, somehow fried glutinous rice is always paired with preserved meat but we have seen from a few places in Shenzhen that they do make a very nice fried rice with diced preserved meat. This was pretty nicely done here as well.
Baked chrysanthemum cake (桂花糕) (¥13) – Pretty nice presentation. I thought it tasted mildly sweet like steamed white sugar cake (白糖糕). For $13, no one was really complaining much.
Double-boiled hasma with papaya (木瓜燉雪蛤) (¥23) – Somehow everyone just talked about the small umbrella, but not the sweet soup itself. I wonder why.
Now I see why people are so crazy about this place. How crazy you ask? Lineup starts as early as 4:30pm! I think with the bargain prices, generous portion and generally above-average food quality, it’s without question a top option in Futian.
