Despite the sweltering heat which at times felt almost unbearable, I thought today’s adventure at the World Expo turned out to be a truly memorable experience. After nearly seven hours under the relentless sun, the crew finally decided it was time to call it a day.
While we were taking the metro back to Shinsaibashi (心齋橋), little nugget kept pestering me about our dinner plan for tonight. To his defense, he hasn't had a lot to eat all day (same for the rest of us) and he's understandably very hungry. But the moment I told him we’ll be having ramen for dinner, his eyes immediately lit up with excitement.
Ramen lovers from Hong Kong will likely be familiar with Japanese ramen master Hayashi Takao (林隆臣), owner of Style Hayashi in Osaka and a key figure behind one of my favorite ramen shops in Hong Kong, Ramen Cubism (立体派). His latest collaboration, Men Style Tanimoto Ke Honmachi (麵スタイル谷本家 本町店), located inside the bustling Shinsaibashi-Suji Shopping Street (心齋橋筋商店街), and a short walk from Honmachi Station (本町), is a joint venture with Yoshisuke Tanimoto (谷本吉绍) from Reiwa no Tora.
The two-story ramen shop features a cozy ground-floor counter with just seven seats.
We opted for the mezzanine level which offers a more comfortable table seating area perfect for groups or those looking to settle in for a proper meal.
Chicken shellfish ramen (鶏の貝醤油/塩-煮玉子つき) (1,200 yen) – Men Style Tanimoto Ke Honmachi is known for two standout ramen options: a Sapporo-style rich miso ramen with grilled pork, and a lighter, more refined chicken shellfish ramen, available in shio (salt) or shoyu (soy sauce) versions.
With clear broths more up my alley, I went with their chicken shellfish shoyu ramen.
As usual, I took a sip of the broth first and was instantly blown away by its deep, umami-rich flavors. The combination of clams, chicken and pork created a beautifully layered taste that was complex yet comforting.
The "toro-toro" red egg with its runny yolk. Pretty nice.
The wheat noodles were smooth, slightly chewy, and had just the right elasticity to cling onto the broth.
Little nugget was absolutely thrilled to see such a variety of toppings, with grilled chicken, chicken fillet, roasted pork in addition to the bamboo shoots and the egg. The grilled chicken was really juicy and tender.
The chicken fillet velvety.
Last but not least, a slice of roasted pork with some lovely smoky flavors. You really could't ask for more! (Well, actually you can for 300yen more, you get a slice of grilled scallop 😆😆).
After all the hard work and walking at the World Expo, we were all craving for something simple, hearty and satisfying. This bowl of ramen delivered exactly that. A perfect end to a long day.
Now time to get some rest as we have another exciting adventure ahead in Kyoto tomorrow. Stay tuned!
