After raving so much about my last meal at Dagefan (大鴿飯), it came as no surprise that during our weekend trip to Shenzhen, the team unanimously requested a lunch stop at this roast pigeon specialist.
At 12:30pm, Dagefan was buzzing with hungry diners, all eagerly waiting for a taste of their famous roast pigeon. But having learned from the mistake I made from last time, I came prepared this time! I have already remotely scooped up a ticket to minimize our waiting time. ✌✌
Caramelized black char siu (焦糖黑叉燒) (¥76) – We kicked off the meal with this beautifully tender, well-marbled pork, coated in a deeply caramelized crust. It was absolutely mouth-watering, with a melt-in-the-mouth texture that lingered in all the right ways. That said, for ¥76, six small pieces felt a bit stingy.
Delicious, yes but at that price, a few more pieces would’ve helped prevent us from fighting over the last bite!
Dagefan, or “Big Pigeon Rice” with black truffle (黑松露大鴿飯) (¥69) – One of their many signature dishes. The rice was cooked in a rich broth of pigeon and pork bone, with a hint of black truffle. The result? A slightly crispy, umami-packed rice topped with steamed pigeon meat and gizzards. While it was good, I’d still rank the roast pigeon and char siu a touch higher in terms of flavor and satisfaction.
Roast pigeon (爆汁紅燒鴿皇) (¥59) – The star of the show. With perfectly crispy skin and juicy, flavorful meat, each bite lived up to its name (literally bursting with rich pigeon juices).
Irresistible and very satisfying.
Stir-fried choy sum (生炒菜心) (¥43) – Some veggies to bring balance to the richness of everything else. Nothing fancy, but a necessary contrast to the heavier dishes.
That was a pretty satisfying meal and I was glad to finally bring the whole crew here for the unique experience. But from a health standpoint, we might need to give our bodies a little break before diving into another pigeon feast anytime soon!
