We’re spending the night in Shenzhen, and I had a bit of a head start with my meeting wrapping up earlier than expected. With some time to kill before the rest of the team arrived, I took a leisurely stroll around Elements Shopping Mall.
Feeling a bit peckish and knowing dinner was still a few hours (and several rounds of arcade games) away, I figured I should grab a quick bite. As luck would have it, Pandan Asian Fusion Bistro (斑蘭) was just around the corner.
Penang fried kway teow with shrimp (檳城古法炒貴刁) – It's been a while since I last had a good plate of fried kway teow so this was a no-brainer.
I thought the flat noodles were stir-fried pretty nicely and there was the generous portion of ingredients like shrimp and Chinese sausage (but no fish cakes). The texture was spot on but my only complaint would be the seasoning. While it leaned heavily into the savory territory, it lacked the signature balance of sweetness and spicy kick that typically defines a great fried kway teow.
As I was taking off for the rapid train station, I couldn't help but notice a newly opened ice-cream parlour right next to Pandan. Too bad little nugget wasn't around. I bet he would love a scoop of vanilla ice-cream before dinner.
