Tong Hap Hing MixC 唐合興香港飯店 萬象天地店 (Shenzhen, CHINA) ★★★★☆

We're making a research trip to Shenzhen’s Nanshan district this weekend, a little preview of our upcoming getaway next week. While we’ll be spending time at our usual stomping ground, MixC World (萬象天地), this afternoon we decided to switch things up for lunch and try a new dim sum spot for a change.

Instead of our go-to place Golden Tao Tao Ju (金牌陶陶居), we headed towards Tong Hap Hing (唐合興), another upscale Cantonese restaurant located within the upscale mall. Like its neighbor, it offers a refined dim sum experience at surprisingly reasonable prices.

The dining room at Tong Hap Hing is tastefully decorated in bright red tones, creating an inviting atmosphere that strikes a balance between comfort and elegance. It instantly felt like a good place to settle in after a long morning of walking.

Unfortunately, there was a network problem connecting to the restaurant’s ordering app so we weren’t able to place the orders ourselves. It got worse with the pacing as dishes were coming 5-10 minutes apart.

Pan-fried turnip cake with XO sauce (XO醬香煎蘿蔔糕) (¥29) – Crispy on the outside but slightly hard inside. Not the perfect texture, but since we haven't had much to eat all day, we weren’t complaining.

Deep-fried glutinous dumplings (青蘋果鹹水角) (¥31 These adorable, green apple-shaped dumplings have become more popular in recent years. Loved the flaky crust and the savory filling of minced pork, mushrooms, and a light but flavorful sauce.

Steamed dumplings with sakura shrimps (櫻花蝦皮餃) (¥33) – A refreshing twist on the classic har gow.

Delicate, light, and a nice change of pace.

Steamed scallop dumplings (原隻元貝鳳眼餃) (¥39) – Little nugget is a huge fan of scallops and he’s over the moon with this one.

Stir-fried choy sum with lard (豬油渣炒菜心) (¥38) – Vegetables and lard seem to be a match made in heaven. Addictive.

Baked Wagyu beef tart with abalone (原隻鮑魚和牛撻) (¥78) – This one took a while to arrive, but it was worth the wait.

Topped with a whole abalone, the flaky puff pastry and wagyu filling were rich and satisfying, elevated by a deeply flavorful sauce that tied everything together beautifully.

Little nugget is vying for more game time after the meal.

Tong Hap Hing turned out to be a nice replacement for Golden Tao Tao Ju. In fact, there are more than a handful of dim sum spots at MixC that are worth a closer look. It’s no surprise this place has become such a magnet for Hongkongers ; a one-stop destination for food, shopping, and lifestyle all under one stylish roof.
