Happy Kitchen Kin No Shika (金の鹿) is a family-run restaurant located on the edge of Nara Park (奈良公園), serving a variety of comfort foods like katsu-sando, pancakes, burgers, and more.
Thanks to its convenient location near the South Gate of Todai-ji (東大寺), it has become a popular stop for tourists looking for a quick bite or refreshing drink before or after visiting the iconic temple.
We had originally planned to just snap a few photos of the golden deer statue in front of the restaurant at Yumekaze Plaza before continuing on our journey.
But with the morning heat already in full force, most of us decided that sitting down for a cool drink sounded far better than braving the sun to explore Todai-ji.
Mom would never say no to pancakes especially when they were served with whipped cream.
Pork katsu-sando with tonkatsu sauce, another crowd pleaser and we shared an order among the six of us.
While little nugget wasn’t quite ready for food at that hour, he was convinced he was going to thirst to death. Thankfully, a refreshing watermelon smoothie came to the rescue.
I was one of the few on my team who actually made it to Todai-ji.
As always, deer roamed freely throughout Nara Park but unlike our previous visit, there were noticeably fewer of them near the Nara National Museum.
Most of the deer seemed to prefer gathering near the entrance to Todai-ji, perhaps realizing that they had better chances of getting fed there!
