Macca House Sannneizaka Ten 抹茶館 京都三年坂店 (Kyoto, JAPAN) ★★★☆☆

After a very filling teppanyaki lunch, we figured the best way to walk it off was to make our way from Yasaka Shrine (八坂神社) all the way up to Kiyomizu Temple (清水寺) — or at least, that was the plan.

As always, we took the scenic route — a slow, deliberate walk through Ninenzaka (二年坂), the stone-paved slope that's as charming as it is photogenic. Lined with traditional wooden machiya, postcard-perfect tea houses, and the occasional rickshaw trundling by, it’s easily one of the most atmospheric spots in Kyoto.

But Kyoto in early autumn still knows how to turn up the heat. And today, it was sizzling. With the heat and humidity doing its best to wear us out, we decided a cooling pit stop was in order. Having already visited Kumonocha Café (雲ノ茶) and Yojiya Café on previous trips, we settled on Macca House Sannenzaka Ten (抹茶館 京都三年坂店) this time — a long-standing favorite among matcha lovers.

As expected, the name of the game here is Japanese matcha — and rightly so. After all, we're in the ancient capital of Japan, where tea culture runs deep.

Given its prime location and the brand's popularity among tourists, this place used to be impossible to get into during summer months. I still remember lines snaking out the door. But this afternoon?

Zero wait time. Not even a queue.

I went with a frosty iced matcha latte, and it was exactly what I needed. Cold, creamy, with a beautifully earthy bitterness from the matcha that cut through the heat like a breeze through a bamboo forest.

Despite the initial ambition to scale our way up to Kiyomizu Temple, the clock was ticking. With a highly-anticipated dessert reservation coming up in under an hour, we made the executive decision to abandon the climb and head downhill instead, where our parents were already waiting at the department store.
