I thought we were going to spend the entire evening at the arcade center until closing time, but we ended up throwing in the towel by 9pm, just an hour before they shut things down.
Instead of venturing outside Coastal City for dinner, we decided to head downstairs for a quick hotpot meal at Yunshanji Yunnan Wild Fungi Hot Pot Restaurant (蕓山季 雲南野生菌火鍋). (Is there even such a thing as a quick hotpot dinner? 🤔)
We grabbed a seat in a quiet corner, which was perfect for relaxing and winding down after hours of gaming.
Yunshanji specializes in wild fungi hotpot with a signature broth made by simmering 18 different types of wild mushrooms from Yunnan. That alone got us very intrigued.
Signature wild fungi broth (滋味生菌湯鍋) (¥98) – And here's their signature wild fungi broth, deep and aromatic. A great base to build the meal around.
Seasonal wild fungi platter (當季野生菌五拼) (¥88) – We've ordered additional wild fungi just to make sure that everybody got to try a variety of mushrooms.
Once our server tossed in all the mushrooms, he told us to wait for about 15 minutes until the flavors to develop, and then quickly disappeared.
15 minutes later… the aroma was absolutely divine.
Wagyu beef shank (山地雪花和牛金錢腱) (¥42) –This was the first of the beef trio to arrive.
For me, it was the least impressive. The thin slices curled up immediately in the broth, turning into tiny balls of meat. When it comes to hotpot, meatiness matters, and this one just didn’t deliver.
Hand-cut beef (原味手切牛肉) (¥48) – I had high hopes for this as hand-cut beef was always considered the best for hotpot. At least that's the saying in Hong Kong.
I thought the texture was a little bouncy but overall, not bad.
Angus beef shoulder (高原育牛Angus嫩肩) (¥58) – The last of the trio. This cut looked lean and meaty. Exactly what I was looking for.
Despite not being the most tender of the three, it had the best mouthfeel and paired incredibly well with the flavorful broth.
Minced black tiger prawn (寶藏黑虎蝦膠) (¥58) – Absolutely loved this. The texture was really firm, crisp and juicy offering a satisfying bite with a rich, full flavor. 👍👍
Tri-color noodles (勁道撈麵) (¥16) – Not sure what the three colors represented. Green might be spinach, purple maybe taro? Either way, they were a fun addition and tasted pretty good.
We got ourselves some vegetables and that was all we could muster at this hour (almost 10:15pm). Little nugget wanted to return to the arcade centre and we eventually did. But we only got about 10 more minutes of game time before the staff started turning off the lights. I guess it's finally time to crash.
