With more than 1,000 outlets across China, Ye Gelato 野人先生 ("Mr. Barbarian") is easily the biggest ice-cream shop chain in the nation. I have always wanted to give them a shot so right before heading to TeamLab at Future Park, I made a quick detour for a scoop of their famous gelato.
Like many artisanal gelaterias, 野人先生 makes their gelato in small batches, which means only a handful of flavors are available at any given time. Known for their more unconventional offerings — think kale or rice, I figured I should be a little adventurous this afternoon.
Single or double scoop, that is the ultimate question.
Apparently, they take their scoop sizes very seriously: single (130 grams) or double (155 grams).
Each ice-cream cup coming out of the shop needs to be weighed on the scale first.
Rice (大米) – We all had our share of rice gelato during our travel in Japan before.
But this guy's having it for the first time. And he thought it tasted a little funny, especially with rice hidden inside the gelato.
Pistachio (開心果) and Osmanthus sweet fermented rice (桂花酒釀) – I had the double scoop myself. I thought the pistachio one was the clear winner for me. Creamy, delicate and nutty without going over the top. The osmanthus flavor wasn't bad but it didn't really blow me away.
That's all the time we had for gelato (most of them had melted under the heat at this point). Now time to focus on our arcade games.
