When news broke last year that Tokyo Banana now sells banana curry doughnuts at its new flagship store in Tokyo Station, I was really looking forward to giving it a try.
Finally, I got the perfect opportunity to do so as tonight's dinner venue was just a comfortable 5-minute walk from Tokyo Station.
But all hopes were shattered when I saw the empty trays at the display counter. The banana curry doughnuts were long gone. All that was left were two pieces of banana red bean doughnuts (324 yen).
By the time I placed my order for the second last banana red bean doughnut, the last piece was already sold. That was a close call!
This didn't look like it was ready for action so I have asked the folks here to put it in the air-fryer for a nice finishing touch.
After 3 minutes or so, it was in the perfect shape and texture of a doughnut. Soft and spongy.
The banana flavored dough really caught me by pleasant surprise. Very delicate and its sweetness was perfectly complemented by the red bean paste filling. And I couldn't say enough about the crispy batter. It was a very nice mouthfeel. Soft, spongy inside and crispy outside. I don't think a typical doughnut can ever match that.
I guess a return trip for the banana curry doughnuts is definitely something worth exploring.
