Today, I have a series of medical appointments and examinations that will keep me in Central all day. Having fasted since lunch yesterday, I started the day on an empty stomach and by 11am, I was finally given a short break after completing a couple of tests.
Without hesitation, I jogged downstairs to The Mandarin Cake Shop in search for something sweet. Something that would give my blood sugar a boost.
As usual, it was a busy morning at the cake shop but I was fortunate enough to get myself a seat without much of a wait.
There are a few new treats on display this afternoon, including the tropical-inspired Coco-Cabana and a cute Jasmine, Apricot, and Pistachio cake.
Mascarpone and strawberry slice ($78) – A refreshing layered cake with green tea sponge, strawberry gel, mascarpone and lemon mousse.
The fruity acidity from the strawberry and lemon really stood out nicely, providing a lovely balance against the light mascarpone while the green tea sponge added a soft, airy texture to the mix. Not bad.
Of course, I got to have my daily caffeine fix.
It had been a long time since I last had to fast for a medical examination, or for anything for that matter. Surprisingly, I wasn’t as hungry as I expected to be. The last time I took this same test, I ended up having a piece of cake followed by a large doughnut.
