Kee Wah Tearoom 奇華茶室 (Hong Kong, CHINA) ★★★☆☆

When I first moved back to Hong Kong, Kee Wah Tearoom (奇華茶室) was part of a handful of restaurants on my go-to list. Conveniently located at Jade & Pearl Plaza (翡翠明珠廣場) in Causeway Bay, it offered a nice mix of Asian and Western dishes, perfectly paired with refreshing iced milk tea. After a closure that lasted for a few years, the tearoom reopened in Wanchai at Lee Tung Avenue in 2017, nestled in a beautifully restored building. Although I haven’t visited as often as I’d like, I do my best to drop by occasionally for nostalgia's sake. Today, I got that chance again following my morning meeting.

Iced milk tea (凍奶茶) – The fragrant tea flavors were noticeably missing and the balance between the milk and tea was off, resulting in a texture that was less than silky.

Hainanese chicken rice (海南雞飯) – This dish has been a favorite of mine for over twenty years, and it tasted just as great today.

The chicken was soft and tender matching up well with the rice that was rich with chicken oil.

Coffee ice-cream – I would much prefer the baked sago pudding but my server told me right off the bat that there would be no trading-up even if I was OK to drop a few more bucks. This was OK but ice-cream wasn’t something I had in mind when I thought about desserts at Kee Wah.

Always nice to come back for a return trip. Hopefully, I get more of these chances in the next two months when I have more meetings lined up in Wanchai.
