Bai Le Restaurant 百樂餐廳 (Hong Kong, CHINA) ★★☆☆☆

I am back at Lockhart Road for the first time in a long long time. A couple of decades ago, a young and mellow guy started his career off right here after finishing school. It was good to be back.

Obviously, a lot has changed over the years; restaurants came and gone. The "two-dish-rice (兩餸飯)" place I used to frequent was nowhere to be found. In fact, I d
on't think I recognize any of these restaurants anymore.

Since I couldn’t find any familiar names, I decided to choose one at random for breakfast this morning – Bai Le Restaurant (百樂餐廳).

Iced milk tea (凍奶茶) – The tea was a little stronger than I expected but I enjoyed its velvety texture.

Pickled Vegetable & Pork Rice Noodle Soup (雪菜肉絲米)  It's a canteen-style cha chaan teng (not a really big one) so the breakfast options weren’t especially sophisticated. The pickled vegetables and shredded pork were likely straight from a can. I like those places who made their own pickled vegetables.

Scrambled eggs with ham and a buttered toast.

This street in Wanchai brought back a flood of memories. I used to line up here a lot for take-away lunches. To be brutally honest, it wasn’t the nicest neighborhood to work in; it was old, crowded and a bit chaotic at times. But I got through a lot during the three years I worked here, including the SARS outbreak. I still remember one particular evening during the early days of SARS: as I was leaving the office, I noticed a few street vendors selling medical face masks. I stood there, puzzled, wondering what on earth was going on.
