It was my first time riding the Ngong Ping 360 cable car and let’s just say it turned out to be quite the experience. The sky was clear blue when we boarded the cable car, and everything seemed perfect. But once we reached the midway point of the journey, the weather took a dramatic turn. Out of nowhere, heavy rain started pouring down, with water drifting into our cabin. I had to open my umbrella inside the cable car just to avoid getting completely soaked!
To make things even more intense, strong winds were blowing in from the seaside, causing the cable car to sway and tremble. It honestly felt like we were on a ride at a theme park - thrilling but a bit nerve-wracking. Needless to say, we were incredibly relieved to finally catch sight of the Big Buddha and the Ngong Ping 360 terminal in the distance.
Contrary to the stormy ride, the weather at Ngong Ping Village was surprisingly decent when we arrived at Ngong Ping Village (昂坪市集), a marketplace with themed attractions, dining, and shopping options directly connected to the Ngong Ping 360 cable car terminal.
The first thing that caught my eyes was this gelateria called Da Dolce Gelato Italiano. Yeah, we needed something frosty to quench our thirst immediately.
There were about 20 flavors of homemade gelato, many with unique local twists: ginger and vinegar (薑醋), tofu, and even curry chocolate!
Little nugget wasn’t feeling too adventurous, so he played it safe with a classic vanilla (left). But me? I went all in with the curry chocolate (咖哩巧克力) flavor without thinking twice.
And you know what? It was actually pretty good. While it didn’t have the ultra-creamy texture of premium gelato like the ones from Messina, the mix of curry and chocolate was surprisingly well balanced. It wasn’t exactly thirst-quenching like I originally hoped but it definitely woke me up instantly.
Yeah I know, vanilla ice-cream never disappoints!
