InterContinental Lyon Hotel Dieu (Lyon, FRANCE)

It’s my second-ever visit to Lyon and little nugget’s first. Surprisingly, there haven’t been many new hotel openings since our last visit in the summer of 2016. In fact, one hotel that truly stands out from my research is the InterContinental Lyon Hotel Dieu, which opened in 2019.

InterContinental Lyon Hotel Dieu is housed in one of Lyon’s most iconic and historic landmarks, the Grand Hôtel-Dieu, which functioned as a hospital for over 800 years. The site began as the Pont du Rhône Hospital in 1184 and evolved into the Renaissance & Rabelais, a major hospital centre by 1532. I’ve had my share of unique lodging experiences in the past but staying at a former major hospital is undoubtedly one of the most distinctive one yet.

We arrived in Lyon shortly after lunch, and as soon as I dropped off my car keys at the concierge, our special journey officially began.

I proceeded to the hotel reception, where I was warmly greeted by the staff. Check-in could have been more efficient but we eventually got our keys.

Following the direction of their young manager, we enjoyed a quick tour of the hotel grounds, along with a sneak peek at our room and the amenities. Little nugget wasted no time settling in and having a good time while we started to unpack.

The interior design was a nice blend of history and contemporary luxury.

The interior design is a harmonious blend of history and contemporary luxury. The greys, blues, and occasional ochres meld beautifully with the building's natural stone.

Continuing the hotel's "monastic yet precious" theme, the bathroom design emphasizes raw materials with historical nods.

The walk-in rainforest shower features a deep blue palette, adding a touch of the sea to the ambiance.

It's rare to find a European hotel with such classy décor, complete with a large bathtub that adds a modern touch of elegance.

Our room faced the courtyard rather than the river, so it wasn't the scenic view that would blow us away.

The hotel is integrated into the Grand Hôtel-Dieu, which is a high-end shopping and leisure complex within the same historic building.

What a wonderful stay it has been, but now it's time for us to move on to our next destination, Valence, which is about an 80-minute drive from here. Should be a piece of cake!
