Just like we drew it up, the gang arrived at The Fullerton Ocean Park Hotel a little after 11am in the morning. It was our first staycation experience so little nugget couldn't wait to check out the ocean view from our room. But one tiny problem..... the check-in time is officially 3pm. We had no choice but suck it up for three more hours.
The good news was, there were more than enough attractions and activities here that kept us busy over the next three hours, and we started with an early lunch at Jade (玉), the hotel's exquisite Chinese restaurant one level above Lighthouse Café.
Jade's ambiance is elegant yet relaxed highlighted by the generous space and amazing view from the ceiling-to-floor windows. The dining room is flooded with natural light everywhere even in a cloudy day like this.
Steamed shrimp dumplings (晶瑩鮮蝦餃) – This came from the kid's menu so just two pieces of har gow for little one. Pretty delicate.
Steamed sea cucumber dumplings (晶瑩遼參餃) – Like the shrimp dumplings, they did a very good job with the thin wrapper.
But the texture of the fillings really felt (and it tasted) more like diced mushrooms than sea cucumber.
Bak Kut Teh Xiao Long Bao (肉骨茶小籠包) – We've had enough dan dan or mala (麻辣) xiao long bao, it's time for something different. Bak Kut Teh (肉骨茶), anyone?
I have always had a soft spot for Malaysian and Singaporean food so I was pretty happy with the Asian twist. The herbal notes of the broth were an interesting match with the pork meat.
Steamed pork and shrimp dumplings with salmon roes (三文魚子籽燒賣) – Not bad.
Pan-fried rice roll with XO sauce (XO醬煎腸粉) – The spicy kick from the XO sauce and mixed peppers was pretty mild.
Steamed rice roll with barbecued pork (蜜汁叉燒腸粉) – One of the more successful dim sum this afternoon. The rice rolls were nice and moist, working well with the succulent barbecued pork. Plenty of fragrance from the coriander.
Fried Hsinchu rice vermicelli with conpoy, crab meat and egg (金瑤桂花蟹肉炒新竹米粉) – Pretty good "wok hei" from the fried rice vermicelli with the conpoy and crab meat adding to the texture of the dish. But someone might have forgotten about the salt.
Little nugget couldn't stop eating the rice rolls, even the spicy ones with XO.
We tried to hide the fact from him that the xiao long baos came with a different type of broth. So, he kept saying the soup tasted funny. 😆
Like many other hotel restaurants, the food menu at Jade was a little hit-and-miss but it does boast an unparalleled ocean view that very few others can come close to match.
