I have a surprise dinner lined up for the moms tonight. They all knew a Mother's Day dinner of some sort was coming but they had no idea where we were heading until we finished our visit to M+ Museum in late afternoon.
It's been more than a decade since I last enjoyed a meal at Felix, an iconic restaurant perched on the top floor of the prestigious The Peninsula Hotel that used to be the crown jewel of Hong Kong's dining scene two decades ago.
It's probably true that the restaurant no longer has the same pedigree nor clientele as it did 20 years back but it still boasts the same breathtaking harbour view.
I remembered this dining room used to look a little bigger but I could be wrong.
Some bread to start things off. This looked like a similar selection of homemade bread we got from Gaddi's but a closer look revealed that they weren't exactly as good.
They've got the hand-made butter to go with their bread.
We ordered the early bird dinner cuz some of us wanted to crash early tonight. Can't blame them after a full day of activities starting from early this morning.
Pan-fried foie gras – The small slice of pan-fried foie gras was served up with a hazelnut crust, along with green apple relish, on top of a rather underwhelming toasted brioche. Not a great start.
Char-grilled octopus – If I could start all over again, this starter would've been my top choice. The charcoal grilled octopus which was crispy on the outside, soft and tender inside, was nicely paired with potato espuma and fennel, and finished off wonderfully with some extra kick from the sprinkle of paprika powder and olive oil caviar atop. A great dish with an exciting mix of flavors and textures.
Patagonian toothfish – I thought this would be a safe bet and it turned out to be exact the case. The beautifully cooked toothfish fillet was matched up nicely with a variety of clean flavors from the caviar Beurre Blanc, purple couscous, broccolini, and snow peas.
Felix Catalan cream – Dessert was Spanish Catalan cream, cousin to the French Crème Brûlée.
This was really full of flavors thanks to the supporting cast of fresh raspberries, grapefruit and bread crumbs. I love the almond ice-cream on top giving the dessert some lovely nutty flavors.
Some mignardises including lemon macarons, jelly candy (with wine), butterfly cookies and heart-shaped chocolates to give our Mother's Day celebration a sweet ending.
The staff here made a few glaring mistakes which I thought should have never happened in a 5-star hotel, especially with the statue of The Peninsula. But that's not going to ruin the moods of the moms tonight.
