After our dim sum lunch at Fan Lou (蘩樓), everybody went back to the arcade centre for more game time but I was a man on a mission with a number of spots to check off my list.
Hopping on the subway train, I made my way to Donggualing station (冬瓜岭站) where my adventure awaits me at the luxurious Upperhills (深業上城).
My first stop was one of the hottest cafes buzzing on Mainland China’s social media these days, tpd 甜品店 Dessert House located on the third floor of the shopping complex. The exterior instantly transported me to a charming corner of France!
The cozy 20-seater dessert shop cum coffee shop was beautifully decorated in modern European style. It was flooded with natural light thanks to the high ceiling which significantly enhanced the overall aesthetic.
At the display counter, there were a small selection of cakes highlighted by the different flavors of chiffon cakes.
I decided to take a seat at the bar and check out the dessert and drink menu by scanning the QR code.
Green tea latte (¥28) – The green tea was incredibly subtle.
Mango, coconut, caramel (¥60) – Since it was a place known for its chiffon cakes (戚風蛋糕), it would have been a missed opportunity not to sample one.
I was told by my server to spoon all the way to the bottom to experience the full range of ingredients in each bite.
This was a tropical inspired version of the chiffon layered with fresh mango slices, coconut mousse, homemade caramel ganache, caramel cream, mango and passion fruit jam, and of course the chiffon cake.
I liked the way they have spread the chiffon cake around in different layers and thoughtfully interspersed with fruity elements, enhancing the overall mouthfeel.
It was a nice escape to France, albeit for just 30 minutes. I wish there were more places like this in Hong Kong or Shenzhen, where people could truly unwind from the hustle and bustle of city life and find a moment of serenity.
