I had a lot of things planned for tonight mainly over on the Gangnam side but a flight delay and the nightmare traffic from the airport to the city centre saw us arriving at our hotel almost 2 hours late. Coupled with the poor weather conditions, and there goes my evening plans. So, I decided to stick around my team tonight and the plan was to hang around Myeongdong, after we checked into our apartment hotel.
As we have skipped lunch earlier today, the first order of business was to grab a quick supper in Myeongdong. Without further delay, we decided to head over to Myeongdong’s fried chicken alley right across the street from Hotel 28 Myeongdong.
Some of the Korean chicken restaurants like Chicken 678 were already long gone since we were last here. They were replaced by some of the newer generation of Korean fried chicken chains like BHC and Puradak which have also opened in Hong Kong in recent years. Wanting to avoid anything we could easily find back home, we eventually settled on Daily Beer (생활맥주 명동점)—a fried chicken and beer joint that's still flying under the radar for most Hongkongers.
We followed little nugget upstairs.....
Like the seats downstairs, it got pretty chaotic at times with diners talking loudly after a couple of beers. As usual in this kind of situation, we tried our best to tune out the noise but it wasn’t easy.
Angry Bird Black (₩23,000) – The original Korean fried chicken seasoned with sweet garlic soy sauce.
It came as a whole chicken — wings, thighs, breast and well, everything so not surprisingly, it was really filling. The sauce had a nice balance between sweet and savory, with a mild spicy kick that’s pretty standard around here. Not bad.
Angry Bird Half & Half Crispy + Crunch (₩21,000) – I requested for wings only for this one.
Angry Bird Crispy – It had a bit of a KFC vibe, but with chili flakes 🌶️ sprinkled on top. It wasn’t bad, but if we had to eliminate one from the trio, this would be the first to go (as it had nothing particularly memorable).
Angry Bird Crunch – This came with more or less the same sweet and spicy seasoning as the Angry Bird Black, only that it was served dry.
What really set it apart was the generous sprinkle of corn flakes on top, adding a satisfying crunch to every bite. It immediately reminded me of those "storm and sand chicken wings (風沙雞翼)" we used to have as kids. Definitely the winner tonight without a doubt.
At this point, Jelloman and little nugget got a ping from Madame Taekwondo declaring she’s ready to meet up. Yeah she’s in town for a meeting in Gyeongju so little one got to meet his favorite auntie again. What a special treat for him!
