When it comes to Cantonese desserts in Shenzhen, Ban Maa Tong Soei (彬記甜水) and Chiu Gee Chinese Dessert (趙記傳𠄘) have long held a special place in my heart. But I’ve always been on the lookout for a third member to complete my personal dessert trifecta and perhaps Ruyuan Dessert Soup (如愿糖水) could be the missing piece.
Located on the third floor of Upperhills (深業上城) along the open-air terrace shopping street, Ruyuan specializes in chilled Chinese desserts infused with fruity and floral ingredients an ideal match to combat the sweltering summer heat.
Ruyuan longan medley (如愿小滿足) (¥28) – One of the two signature desserts here, this was a longan (龍眼) lover's dream. (Yes, I made up the English name myself).
Each bowl of this was made with 15 pieces of longan! The fresh longan, and longan jelly were nicely matched with shaved ice and coconut milk offering a refreshing, light and delicately sweet dessert that's perfect for cooling off on a hot summer day.
That said, I’ll admit I’m a bit of an old-school guy when it comes to Cantonese dessert soups. I do have a soft spot for the traditional warm varieties and while Ruyuan’s modern take is undeniably refreshing, it doesn’t quite strike the nostalgic chord I’m looking for.
So, the search for the third dessert shop on my list continues.
