Our first dinner of this Fukuoka trip was finally in the books. After enjoying a leisurely walk back to Haruyoshi Bridge (春吉橋), I was all set to head back to our hotel which was just a short 2-minute stroll away. But little nugget had something else in mind.
He spotted the pop-up store of Coco Gelato at a small area right next to the bridge (just off haruyoshi-riverside-dori Avenue), where it's currently hosting a summer event which included laser show, live music and food stalls at night.
Since there were only a few souls in front of us, we were happy to go along with the idea of lining up for this small selection of homemade gelato.
Finally, our turn!!! 😻🙏🍦 Pistachio, pineapple and melon.
This guy is all smiles!!!
I decided to dig a little deeper into Coco Gelato and see where the brand came from. Turned out it was originated from Fukuoka and founded by Chef Shohei Ishizuka (石塚祥平), who trained in different parts of Italy including Florence and Bologna.
800/900 yen for a scoop of gelato is certainly not cheap for a small pop-up gelateria but I thought their product was pretty darn good. Their fruit flavored sorbet (honestly, not really a gelato since there wasn't creamy) such as melon and pineapple was clearly their forte. During the dog days of summer, the thirst-quenching sorbet really cooled us down almost instantly (albeit the effect was short-lived). It's kind of like having frozen fruit juice.
