A Happy Pancake 幸せのパンケーキ 福岡天神店 (Fukuoka, JAPAN) ★★★★☆

A second A Happy Pancake (幸せのパンケーキ) has recently opened doors at the new K11 Musea in Hong Kong but as someone who absolutely hates long lineups, I have done my best to avoid it at all cost. Jelloman wasn't happy about that as she's a big fan of Japanese-style soufflé pancakes. So, I promised her I'd bring her to their Fukuoka outpost on this trip.

It wasn't easy finding this branch of A Happy Pancake in Tenjin but thankfully, we got a little bit of help from the street signs.

Turned out it was hidden on the second floor of a small commercial building. Across the street was the legendary Nishitetsu Grand Hotel.

Yes, I'd like the table at the corner facing the wall if that's not already taken.

Unlike last time in Kobe, their branch offers a full English menu and it's not a crappy one printed on A4 paper.

Well, they did have the crappy one we saw in Kobe and it looked like at least half of their soufflé pancakes were no longer available.

As soon as I finished ordering a couple of pancakes, I took off to the semi open kitchen trying to learn how to make these tasty pancakes.

Original soufflé pancakes (1,000 yen) - We have tried their pumpkin and tiramisu flavors in Kobe but nothing beats their original flavor.

This was very light and fluffy. The melt-in-the-mouth texture alone was worth the 20-minute wait.

Original pancakes with milk tea sauce and homemade granola (1,300 yen) - Again very light and fluffy. The milk tea sauce tasted a lot like royal milk tea which has been very popular around Japan. I like the caramelized nuts and pumpkin seeds too, adding some much-needed bite to the dish.

It's always a double-edge sword having these pancakes served with different sauces (tiramisu, matcha, milk tea etc., it doesn't matter). You get the extra flavors from the flavorful sauce but then the pancakes get soaking wet losing the wonderful texture that has made them so popular and irresistible.

Next up, Daimyo district (大名區), one of the trendiest part of Fukuoka.
