Everyone was feeling a bit tired from today's travel so instead of venturing out for dinner, we all decided to just grab something quick near our hotel. Thankfully, Trusty Hotel Premier Kumamoto is located on top of Sakura Machi, a brand new shopping and entertainment hub in the city so we knew good food is just around the corner.
There are a number of restaurants located in a section of the mall called 10 Dinings which can be found on the third floor of Sakura Machi.
I really like the diversity here. A sushi restaurant, a Japanese-Italian fusion pasta restaurant, a steakhouse, a tofu specialist.....but I wanted some tempura.
Tendon Makino (海鮮天丼まきの) specializes in seafood tendon (Japanese tempura rice bowl). Good thing they have Chinese, English and Korean translations on their menu too.
Everything is made to order here. No wonder our tempura came out sizzling hot.
"Plentiful shrimp tempura rice bowl" (1,290 yen) - We got ourselves three of these to share among the four of us.
They certainly didn't call this "plentiful shrimp tempura bowl" for nothing. Apart from the shiso tempura, it came with 3 wild shrimps and 2 shrimps.
Honestly, I couldn't tell which was the wild shrimp but one thing was certain - every piece of shrimp was very meaty and it worked wonderfully well with the thin batter.
I remembered visiting a place called Tempura Makino when I was in Kyoto in 2017 (It's a very popular shop with huge lineups). I wonder if this is an offshoot from that concept. It certainly looks like it but I wasn't unable to find it under their restaurant group's website.
