We have one last chance for a delicious bowl of tonkotsu ramen before we leave Oita in the morning. Knowing this can very well be our last chance for ramen before our trip ends, I decided to make the most of it.
Located in the heart of Oita City, Chaga Shoten Oita (ちゃが商店 大分店) is the highest ranked ramen shop in Oita according to tabelog, although the total score of 3.50 doesn't really jump out at you.
Chaga Shoten specializes in tsukemen noodles, a special type of ramen which are eaten after being dipped in a separate bowl of soup or broth.
We were seated at the counter table (there were only counter table seats) so we got to enjoy watching our chefs go to work.
Chaga Ramen (930 yen) - We ordered this for our little nugget so he didn't have to do all the dipping.
The broth was prepared using their aged pork bones so not surprisingly, the flavors were very rich and creamy, at times a bit gamey too.
The flat noodles worked really well with the broth.
Chaga Tsukemen (950 yen) - Of course I had to try their signature tsukemen noodles. The portion was huge!
Compared to the ramen our little nugget was having, the flavors in this broth were a bit more pronounced.
Now that all of us were fed, it's time to drive up to Beppu. We have just one attraction to make this afternoon but it's a big thing. In fact, it's probably the most anticipated one in the entire trip - African Safari. Little guy finally got his wish to feed his lions and bears.
