Poppies Fish & Chips Soho (London, UNITED KINGDOM) ★★★☆☆

After an up-and-down lunch experience at three Michelin starred Restaurant Gordon Ramsay, we spent the entire afternoon at Harrod’s before hitting the streets on Knightsbridge. We wanted to hang around the streets a little longer but the sun has already set at 4:30pm so sadly there was no more daylight. Rather than wandering in the dark, we took a taxi back to Chinatown to grab ourselves some take-away food for dinner. While mom with her Chinese palate decided to get herself a simple box of barbecued pork rice, Jelloman and I wanted some authentic British food instead. And that would mean some traditional beer battered fish and chips.

There aren’t that many good fish and chip restaurants near Chinatown and Soho. Poppies, a restaurant cum take-out joint is really the best the area has to offer.

I'm going to order take-away and enjoy these fish and chips at the comfort of my home (aparthotel)...

Poppies, a Spitalfields institution (started in 1952) for UK's most popular dish has been a staple in the annual Fish and Chip Restaurant of the Year award for years. Their accolade included UK's Best Independent Fish and Chip Restaurant at the National Fish and Chip Award back in 2014. Their menu now extends beyond just fish and chips to cover dishes like mackerel, seafood platters, jellied eels and a very popular lemon sole.

Like most fish and chip places in London, they offer two versions of it, haddock and cod. Since we don’t usually get haddock fish and chips in Hong Kong, I decided to go that route.

Haddock and chips (£13.95) - The batter was nice and crispy with some lovely crunch. The fish fillet I thought was a little bit drier than I expected but nevertheless not bad.

As usual, for take-away orders, we don’t get the benefit of having their homemade tartare sauce. The small package of Hertz tartare sauce did the trick for us but the overall experience would likely be different if we choose to dine in (the batter would likely be crispier and with the homemade tartare sauce, who knows?)...
