We asked Jelloman's cousin to drop us off at The Cannery Rosebery, once upon a time a soup canning warehouse which is now home to brewing companies, boutique bottle shops and artisan delis for dinner tonight.
Our initial plan was to have Italian food at Da Mario but it turned out to be fully booked for the night. So, we switched to Plan B – Frenchies Bistro and Brewery.
Frenchies Bistro and Brewery is founded by two Frenchies living in Sydney.
Owner-chef Thomas Cauquil brings French bistrot classics that is designed around Australian produce to the table while partner brewer Vincent De Soyres prepares all the craft beers on site.
The brewing team's playground can be seen just behind the dining area.
King prawn tartare, daikon raviole, green apple – Delicious king prawn tartare was served like a burger between two open "raviolo" made with crunchy daikon.
I thought the king prawn tartare wasn't bad. Very lovely texture and sharp sweetness but there was a little too much acidity from the green apple salsa and kiwi.
Seared coral trout, green vegetables, Venus clams – The coral trout was seared on one side delivering a nice smoky flavor. The mildly flavored trout fillet was nicely matched with an intense shellfish and saffron emulsion, with the sugar peas, dill and clams providing some contrasting texture to the mix. Pretty nice dish.
Green and white asparagus, Hollandaise sauce – My first look at the local asparagus and they were pretty decent. The Hollandaise sauce was a little on the light side, which was just fine with me. There was a hint of mustard in there that really tied everything together nicely.
Kinkawooka black mussels Marinieres – Jelloman had the black mussels which were simply cooked with white wine. Not bad from the small samples I had.
The mussels were served with hand-cut fries on the side.
It was our first flight in three years, first since the pandemic so both Jelloman and I were exhausted upon our arrival. We were so blessed to have the energy to venture out for such a nice meal in an unfamiliar neighorhood. Time to head back to our hotel and crash early tonight!
