San Hou Lei 新好利咖啡餅店 (Macau, CHINA) ★★★☆☆

I can't believe we actually woke up early this morning after not sleeping well at all last night (thanks to the cigarette smells). Since we planned to head home in early afternoon, we decided against wasting more time and went straight to Rua Do Cunha (官也街), a narrow pedestrian street in Vila da Taipa which is a famous hot spot for souvenirs and fast food joints and cafes.

We made our second stop at a place called San Hou Lei (新好利咖啡餅店), after a brief stay at Gelatina Mok Yi Kei (莫義記). This is a hole-in-the-wall old-school cafe best known for its Portuguese egg tarts, pork chop buns and pork chop noodles. Time to kill three birds with a stone.

Portuguese egg tart - This wasn't bad. The buttery crust was really flaky and the custard obviously full of flavors.

Pork chop bun - Honestly, I had no idea why people are head over heels with these pork chop buns from Macau. They're reasonably tasty but nothing really to write home about.

Pork chop noodles - We were still hungry after the egg tart and pork chop bun so we decided to go for the hat trick. Certainly won't mind dropping a few more bucks for a fried egg.

I thought the Portuguese egg tart at Lord Stow's was slightly better (not taking anything away from the egg tarts here, which were pretty good). The pork chop bun was quite a bit better than the one we had at Venetian's Cafe Tai Lei Loi Kei (大利來記咖啡室). The pork chop noodles was a nice way to finish my hat trick. All in all, I'd say this is a fairly decent breakfast to start my morning with. Now I'm just going to walk around this area and in two hours, a highly anticipated lunch at The Eight to finish this trip in style.
