Milky Bee Ice Cream (Seoul, SOUTH KOREA) ★★☆☆☆

Last time I had this type of "rose (shaped) ice-cream", I was walking the streets of Paris looking for Amorino.

It's nice to see that it's finally hitting the streets of Myeongdong and the place is called Milky Bee Ice Cream Parlor, you won't miss the lineup.

I was a little disappointed to find out that there are only four combination of flavors to choose from. They simply called them A, B, C and D. Easy enough for us tourists?

These ones are all ready to go!

We had C (₩6,000) which was a 3-layer, rose shaped ice-cream cone with strawberry, chocolate and green tea ice-cream. It sure looked adorable but the taste just wasn't right. Very bland and not milky enough.

  1. That is neat your's had a green layer. I didn't realize we could do that, though I liked the chocolate layer. I will admit the honeycomb softserve had a little better taste than the rose ice cream. We wrote about it too: http://marriedwithmaps.com/2015/11/23/myeongdong-food/

    1. Agree that Honeycomb is a little better and so is Fell+Cole, which is another amazing ice-cream parlor in the city!

  2. If you like mily soft serve, I strongly suggest Baek Mi Dang (百味堂, https://search.naver.com/search.naver?where=post&query=%E7%99%BE%E5%91%B3%E5%A0%82&ie=utf8&sm=tab_nmr&nso=) first, followed by Paul Basset (https://search.naver.com/search.naver?sm=tab_hty.top&where=post&oquery=Paul+Basset+%EC%86%8C%ED%94%84%ED%8A%B8&ie=utf8&query=Paul+Basset+%EC%86%8C%ED%94%84%ED%8A%B8). :)

    1. Thanks kosmose7. Always a pleasure to read your blog. Any recommendation for a nice Italian/French dinner in Seoul? I hope to visit Seoul again sometime in November.

  3. Hi Hedonist HK! I have just come back from a trip to Hong Kong!

I favor classic French with lots of butter and cream, and tend to avoid Nordic-ish modern French. For that reason there are not many favorite French restaurants in Seoul, where most western cuisines are heavily influenced by the Nordic trend. Therefore, my recommendations may be heavily biased, lol. That said, I currently like Pierre Gagnaire (which tends to repeat almost the same ingredients every season after the current chef has taken over the kitchen,
but if you don't visit regularly, it should be OK. I prefer Hong Kong's Pierre, lol. http://blog.naver.com/kosmose7/220728752832), and Votre Maison (http://blog.naver.com/kosmose7/220712584947).

I also enjoy reading your blog and I myself could taste Peninsula Boutique's new pastries thanks to your posting on it. Thanks for that! :)

    1. You are most welcome, kosmose7 (on Peninsula Boutique)! I look forward to trying Votre Maison out soon. Is the place expensive? I can't seem to find much information on it in English...

  5. Votre Maison has just received Michelin one star. It's one of only four French restaurants that received stars, namely Pierre Gagnaire (★★), L'amitié (★), Dining in Space (★), and Votre Maison (★).

    1. I thought I know a little something about dining in Seoul but obviously not! Haha, I couldn't have guessed 10% of that list. Great to hear that Votre Maison is in. I almost went to Dining In Space back in July but thought it's a little pricey for a relatively unknown quality (not much info on the web about this place) so I opted out last minute.

So what do you think about the list? Are the michelin starred Korean restaurants as good as advertised?

  6. Ha ha you know quite a lot though.
Votre Maison (★), IMHO, is at least of two star quality. Looking forward to next year's list already.
Here are some photos (sorry all in Korean) from the Michelin award gala dinner.

Dining in Space (★) is good, although I see some slight hint of homage? cousin? lol from some of France's famous restaurants such as Ledoyen.

As for La Yeon (★★★), it offers good food but overall they tend to tone down the flavors of traditional condiments that for Korean locals including myself it's a bit too subtle.
As I've been telling my foodie friends, I slightly prefer Gaon (★★★, http://blog.naver.com/kosmose7/220233234317).
Its sister restaurant Bicena (★, http://blog.naver.com/kosmose7/90155900410), which received one star, is also pretty good.

I think this rather short star list reflects Seoul's dining scene quite accurately. IMHO, Seoul still has a long way to go especially in terms of Western cuisine.

    1. Thanks for sharing the lovely pictures from the gala dinner! No worries, I have always been using the built-in translator on Naver to read your blog and that has worked out fine for me so far =) So happy to see you get invited to the event!

It's a bit of a coincidence that I happened to watch the new episode of "Seoul refined" by our own chef Alvin Leung 2 weeks ago, where he interviewed Lucia Cho, the lady behind Gaon and Bicena. She seems quite passionate about modern Korean cuisine. That's really nice to see; we need more people like that in the F&B biz. I will definitely pay Bicena a visit next time in Seoul. (Maybe Mishmash too, another interesting restaurant Matthew Chung introduced with this Danish-Korean fusion concept).

I do agree the short list accurately reflects the current state of Seoul's dining scene. It has really come a long way the past 5 years or so and I expect (and hope) it to take off after this launch of the red guide...

  7. Yes! Chef Alvin Leung is one of my most favorite chefs and I had lunch last time when he visited Seoul for the filming of "Seoul Refined". Matthew Chung joined us after the meal too. Being a Korean who appreciates Hong Kong cuisine's refinedness very much, I am always bown away by Chef Alvin Leung's dishes reflecting exactly that plus a 5% wit.

    1. Wow nice pics! He looks slimmer in your pictures. =)

He's one of my favorites too. He was supposedly in Seoul to film "Seoul Refined" and do research for his new casual Korean restaurant at the same time. And I finally got the chance to try that new restaurant, called Bib n Hops who just recently took the place previously occupied by Bo Innovation while Bo Innovation moved next door...

I'm working on my review on Bib n Hops now...

    2. Ooooh! I plan to visit Bib n Hops sooner or later and I look forward to your review on it! He has done a marvellous job at interpreting classic Cantonese cuisine for modern palates. I am curious to see how successfully his new restaurant does it with Korean food.
