It was a dismal day and by the time we decided to leave Samcheongdong, it was pouring hard. Despite having an umbrella, I was soaky wet and desperately needed a place to settle down. That was when I spotted Amandier (아몬디에) right next door to the Anguk subway station.
Talked about exactly what the doctor would order, Amandier is a coffee shop doubling as a patisserie, bakery and chocolatier. Boy, I could definitely use a little sucrose by now.
After a nice cup of hot chocolate (₩5,500), I was ready to take on their hazelnut expresso opera cake (₩6,500).
I thought the texture was fine but it was a little too sweet and that said a lot coming from someone known to have a sweet tooth that's rotten and spoiled.

This place used to be very good when Ruben Jan Adriaan just joined it after he had resgined from his position of executive pastry chef at Mandarin Oriental Singapore. http://blog.naver.com/kosmose7/90097715135
ReplyDeleteThen as you know, he later opened his own shop "Macaron" and things were slightly below the level of his Amandier era, may be because he couldn't use THE BEST ingrendients available any longer as the cost-sensitive shop owner? I don't know... Ha... And as you already know, he is now back in Amsterdam.
I just found out about Chef RJA's return to Amsterdam 2 weeks ago and was a little devastated to say the least. He was one of my favorite pastry chefs in Seoul and I was hoping to bring my mom there to get a taste of exquisite French pastries (though there are some good ones in HK too). Unfortunately, that plan didn't work out.
DeleteBTW, I did manage to visit Hugo & Victor. Hopefully I can finish writing about it this week (I have got a lot of backlogs to post...). Thanks for your recommendation once again!
