Hyatt Regency Kyoto (Kyoto, JAPAN)

I always believe that picking the right hotel could change the entire travel experience. Of course, the term "right" carries a different meaning for different people depending on the individual style, budget and of course purpose of the trip (sightseeing, eating, shopping). For our stay in Kyoto, we wanted to stay away from the hustle and bustle of Kyoto's busiest streets (Gion area) so we ended up picking a place on the quiet side of the ancient city.

Located across the street from Kyoto's National Museum, Hyatt Regency Kyoto checks most boxes on our list - contemporary décor, quiet neighborhood, easy to access and most importantly, it's well within our price range.

We went with a twin bedroom on the ground floor with a garden view (Garden means extra $ I think).

It wasn't the lush garden I was hoping for. Disappointing...

But I was quite happy with the space in the room. Anytime we didn't have to trip all over our luggage to get to the bathroom in a Japanese hotel, it's already a huge bonus.

Separate toilet and bathroom, pretty standard for all the (relatively) new hotels.

There was only one problem - no door separating the shower room and bedroom so I had to step out of shower naked. Luckily, I wasn't traveling with a friend or my sister.

I was quite fascinated by the staircase in the lobby (leading up to the Italian restaurant Sette and Pastry Boutique). They don't really make this kind of stairs in such an exaggerated form anymore in this day and age.

After we freshened up a bit, we kicked off our journey in Kyoto with a visit to Fushimi Inari Shrine (伏見稻荷大社), one of the top tourist spots in the city.

For a hotel that was built in 2006, I thought they did a fairly good job maintaining the conditions of the room, corridor and lobby. We didn't get to check out any hotel restaurants but Pastry Boutique on the mezzanine floor certainly warrants a visit.
