Soba no Mi Yoshimura 蕎麥之實よしむら (Kyoto, JAPAN) ★★★☆☆

After leaving Nishiki Market (錦市場) more than an hour ago, we spent some time walking around Karasuma (烏丸). Since it's more of a residential district, not surprisingly it's very quiet and most restaurants nearby weren't open on a Sunday.

Located just a few steps from Citadines Hotel, Soba no Mi Yoshimura (蕎麥之實よしむら) is a very popular soba restaurant in Kyoto. Knowing we probably won't find any other place that's open around the area (except McDonald next door), we decided to give it a shot.

All the soba were freshly handmade here right at their ground-floor workshop.

Without advance booking, we were told that the wait would be at least an hour!

So I decided to join the little kids next to me on learning how to make soba noodles from the chefs behind the open kitchen.

When they said an hour, they definitely weren't joking! Following the long wait, we were finally escorted up to the second-floor dining area.

A full house!

Japanese egg roll - This wasn't bad but I wanted my soba noodles right about now coz I haven't eaten for a while.

Chicken wings - Very nice crispy skins with charred marks. Yum~

Local oysters - Yes, I needed something to occupy myself before my soba noodles arrive.

I wasted no time putting the oysters on the hibachis (火鉢), a traditional Japanese "cooking stove" with charcoal.

My server came over to make sure that I poured some soy sauce onto the oysters.

Handmade buckwheat soba noodles with prawn tempura - I wanted buckwheat and this was just perfect. Very pleasantly dense texture and slightly chewy bite the exact way it was supposed to be.

Buckwheat ice-cream - Just the perfect wrap for our buckwheat soba experience. It's tough to describe what these two scoops of ice-cream taste like. The sweetness really surprised me a little (since it's my first time having buckwheat ice-cream) but there was some mild bitterness in the mix as well.

Like I said, it's real difficult to describe what it tasted like so I will leave it to you to try it out by yourself.
