Seerestaurant Belvédère (Hergiswil, SWITZERLAND) ★★★★☆

Hergiswil wasn't even on our itinerary when we started our journey in Switzerland but having run out of places to go in Lucerne, I decided to bring the family down to this picturesque town, which was just an easy 15-minute drive south from Lucerne.

Hidden on the waterfront of Hergiswil is Seerestaurant Belvédère, a restaurant awarded a Michelin star and 17 Gault-Millau points, currently under the watchful eyes of renowned Swiss chef Fabian Inderbitzin (who's the chef-owner by the way).

I don't know much about chef Inderbitzin except the fact that he honed his skills at Seehotel Kastanienbaum and Château Gütsch (both in Lucerne).

Before they could wow me with their food menu, it was their breathtaking view of Lake Lucerne that really caught my eyes. I almost felt like a kid spotting his favorite candy in front of a candy store, with my eyes popping wide open in excitement and anticipation.

Lunch started off with a small gazpacho with tomato, basil and crispy croutons, perfect on this hot summer day.

There were just a couple of starters on the multi-course set menu. The first was fresh melon served with ham, ricotta cheese and tomato. Pretty refreshing.

I personally had their homemade rigatoni with salsa verde, stewed tomatoes and mozzarella. That was decent though I kind of regretted not ordering the melon instead (for the refreshing start).

Everybody went with a different main dish this afternoon. The first of our three main dishes was grilled chicken breast with saffron risotto and green beans.  The risotto was creamy and full of flavors thanks to what I thought was veal jus on the bottom. A simple, delicious and unpretentious dish.

Mom had the turbot with scampi and broccoli served in a rich and flavorful truffle butter sauce.

I decided to go with the classic French steak dish, beef rossini which they finished using the traditional interpretation with pan seared foie gras and black truffle sauce.

No one had room for dessert so we quickly settled our bill and moved onto our next destination - Glass museum which is just sitting next door to Seerestaurant Belvédère (almost next door).

Chef Inderbitzin's cuisine was described as modern French by the Michelin guide but it was mostly classic French with the occasional bistro-style dishes in between for us this afternoon. But not to take anything away from this meal, i thought it was always nice to re-visit these simple, delicious and unpretentious dishes. Honest cooking, fresh ingredients and beautiful Lake Lucerne in the backdrop, that makes the perfect recipe for an exceptional dining experience.
