Kinabaji Korean Café and Restaurant 奇納百川 (Hong Kong, CHINA) ★★☆☆☆

It’s been a while since Jelloman and I last ditched little nugget to enjoy a date on our own. Since the oldies were in the mood of bringing him out to play this afternoon, I thought it was time that we had that long over due date. After spending some time shopping at Harbour City, lunch was next and my better half wasted no time picking her favorite cuisine – Korean. As always, I’m willing participant and her partner in crime so we quickly settled down at Kinabaji Korean Café and Restaurant (奇納百川), a new modern eatery specializing in fusion food with Korean inspiration.

We asked for a window seat and was quickly granted our wish.

We were pleasantly surprised with the nice harbour view and interestingly, no taker.

They have a very very long food menu here. I am hoping long means good.

Soy marinated pork knuckle or Jokbal (韓式醬油元蹄) ($138) – We couldn’t think of a better way to kick off the meal than some Korean pork knuckle. This was pretty disappointing though. The knuckle was a little rubbery and really really bland even with the Korean chili sauce. Slow start.

Sea urchin udon (三文魚子海膽忌廉醬烏冬) ($188) – Jelloman wanted some uni so this was a no-brainer. This wasn’t all bad but I found the cream sauce way too sweet for the udon noodles (and no savory kick). It’s almost like having a dessert.

Grilled spring chicken in Makgeolli wine sauce (我不是炸雞) ($188) – The spring chicken was pretty tender but again, lacking flavors.

The chicken was supposed to be marinated in Korean rice wine (Makgeolli) but yet there was no sign of the makgeolli.

Condensed milk peanut butter milkshake (奶醬多奶昔) ($72) – Turns out, the drinks provided something for us to cheer about. My milkshake with condensed milk and peanut butter was so decadently rich and nutty. Interestingly, the inspiration was a “Made in Hong Kong” one rather than Korean (from the local condensed milk and peanut milk toast).

Frozen peach lemonade (冰檸蜜桃) ($72) – Jelloman had the frozen peach lemonade and from what I’ve heard from her, it’s another winner.

The drinks were certainly pretty good but unfortunately, we came here for their Korean dishes. I also didn't like the small portions. For $350 per head, I'm sure I have far better options in Tsim Sha Tsui, and I'm lucky enough, perhaps with the same stunning view too.
