Opened in 1954, Pignol Pâtisserie Emile Zola is one of the iconic cake shops in Lyon by the famous Pignol family which now operates 7 restaurants and 3 cake shops in the city on top of its very successful catering business.
Situated just across the street from Place Bellecour, the storied patisserie carries on the long-standing traditions by founder Vital Pignol with offerings of more than 50 types of cakes and pastries.
I just had a pretty big breakfast back at the hotel so as much as I would like to try one of these, I had to pass.....
They have a tea salon at the back of the cake shop which is perfect for a gourmet break.
Of course, I won't leave here empty handed so I got myself a jumbo caramel macaron (3.6 Euro) to go.
This was pretty flaky. Looked like it's just caramel all the way (I thought it was salted caramel but no salty flavor?).
Just around the corner about 50 feet away, you will find Pignol Bellecour, a gourmet food store operated by the Pignol family serving high quality produce and wine from all over the world.
And some ready-to-go Lyonnais specialties as take-away options.
