As much as I wanted to stick with my original plan and head over to Restaurant Jan for dinner, it was getting a little late to walk all the way to Rue Lascaris. So instead we decided to settle for a quick dinner in Cours Saleya. There are obviously a lot of restaurants near the marketplace and we didn't think we would have any problems picking a good one out randomly.
Le Safari, a brasserie located just around the corner from Glacier Fenocchio and Les Gourmandises d'Angéa, was our unanimous choice after we spotted the wording "Nicoise specialties" on their wall.
Nicoise-style stuffed vegetables (€15) - We thought we better got this out of the way first, a staple of Nicoise cuisine. This is a trio of eggplant, red bell pepper and onion stuffed with a hearty filling of minced pork and rice, and then with cheese and bread crumbs.
Surprisingly this is not oily nor salty as I thought they would be. As a matter of fact, I found them to be rather tasty despite all the simple ingredients.
Deep fried calamari with vegetables and zucchini (€16) - Calamari fritti!? This is more Italian than French, at least that's what I thought. Pretty tasty but a little too salty for my liking.
Spaghetti with scampi and clams (€24) - For the third day in a roll, I'm having spaghetti and scampi. Surprisingly (again), this is the best one out of the three (the other two including Soho Restaurant & Lounge Bar in Genoa and Farinella Ristorante & Pizzeria in Serravalle Scrivia) and the key was simply a much richer sauce to go with the al dente spaghetti. Portion was pretty generous too.
While some dishes provided us with a little pleasant surprise, the same could not be said for the service around here. We pretty much got left in the cold all night and no one really cared enough to come and check on us. But despite all that, I did leave my server with a fairly handsome tip. Maybe I shouldn't.
