We started driving up from Marseille very early this morning. After stops at Avignon and Valence, it's already getting a little dark but we finally made it to Lyon.
We had some problems during our check-in which delayed our plans to tour around the city. Instead of walking around in the dark, we thought we should leave the tour part until tomorrow morning. In the meantime, the plan was to grab a quick dinner and crash early.
Since we will only be spending 40 hours or so in Lyon, we know we will have a tough time squeezing in a meal at L'Auberge du Pont de Collonges (or Maison Paul Bocuse), one of the oldest 3 Michelin starred restaurant in the world by the legendary Paul Bocuse. So perhaps, a casual dinner at Chef Bocuse's Brasserie Le Sud would be the perfect consolation prize. After all, it's just a stone's throw from where we were staying.
To say that Paul Bocuse is the most influential chef coming out of Lyon is quite an understatement. He's one of the greatest chefs of his time in the culinary world and not surprisingly, his face can be found everywhere in Lyon from the front page of a magazine, to the billboards and post cards. He's a truly remarkable ambassador of French cuisine.
Caesar salad (12.9 Euro) - One way to experience Chef Bocuse's casual dining approach was a trip to discover Brasserie Le Sud's sunny cuisine ("Cuisine du Soleil") with a Mediterranean touch. Kicking things off for us was a bowl of Caesar salad with heart of lettuce, thinly sliced chicken breast and Caesar dressing.
Beef tartare (19.4 Euro) - Jelloman had the beef tartare which was one of the most popular dishes at Le Sud. The raw beef was mixed with egg yolk, onions, gherkins and capers and then lightly seared on both sides (They call it Caesar). It was served with a small green salad and pan-fried potatoes with parsley.
Grilled Albacore tuna steak (28 Euro) - I was all set to get the pan-fried dover sole which was served at table-side but a last-minute change of heart had me order the grilled Albacore tuna steak with ratatouille and sweet peppers coulis instead.
This was beautiful (though the Albacore tuna was less fatty than the ones we got from Vancouver).
Dessert was a little out of the question since it's almost bed time so we settled the bill quickly and spent some time walking around Place Antonin Poncet before calling it the night.
